How to Land Your Perfect Summer Internship

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

1) Give Your Resume and LinkedIn a Makeover

When revamping your resume, be sure to make sure it stands out from others while remaining professional. Consider adding a pop of color in the header or using an atypical layout (there are plenty of ideas online). It also helps if your resume and LinkedIn profile have a sense of fluidity. To do this, go through your profile and add important volunteer opportunities, skills, and interests. Most college students neglect to use LinkedIn but, as the name suggests, it can help you connect with future employers.

2) Get Out There and Look

There are so many different places to find internship opportunities. Start off with your dream company’s website (for example Vogue or New York Times for journalist majors, Goldman Sachs for finance majors, Paramount Studios or Disney for film and television majors), and look for internship listings on the site. If this proves unsuccessful, head over to internships.com or a similar internship searching website to find a major-relevant internship in the area you want to work and live over summer.

3) Secure a Place to Live

A majority of internships are in larger cities, and if you are not lucky enough to live within a commutable distance, you will have to find somewhere to live. Many internships are based in or around New York City and the rent is infamously high. To avoid spending all of the money you don’t make at your unpaid internship, search online for cheaper options such as NYU’s summer housing option. It provides college students from all around with subsidized dorm rooms. If your position requires you to be elsewhere, look for sublets for the extent of your internship on Airbnb. These are often small apartments or rooms that are available to rent at affordable prices throughout the summer.

With these tips and your own personal edge in the interview, you should have no problem attaining your summer internship!
