Living in an Apartment: The Reality

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

Whether it’s on or off campus, having an apartment provides you with a lot of freedom. You’re no longer saddled with having to go to the dining hall for every meal, you can have all of your friends over for an impromptu dinner party, and you aren’t awoken in the middle of the night by screaming that seeps in from the hallways. It’s all pretty magical until you realize you have to be an actual adult. What do you mean no one is coming to clean my bathroom?! So before you sign that lease, you should realize all the benefits and downfalls of having your own space.

When you realize your apartment isn’t going to clean itself:

When your friends tell you that you are so lucky to have a kitchen:

When you take the trash out before your whole apartment smells like a landfill:

When you remember you have to go home and make dinner after having class all day:

Buying a ton of groceries and realizing you have to haul them across campus:

Taking your laundry to a dorm building, because your building doesn’t have washing machines:

Going to the front door to get your friends because they can’t swipe in to apartment buildings:

Having your friends guest swipe you into the dining hall:

When your friends want to go out on the weekends, but you have to save money for groceries:

The moment you realize you actually have to buy paper towels, toilet paper, soap, and sponges:

After you spend the day cleaning, grocery shopping, doing dishes, making dinner, and still have time to watch Netflix:
