I was lucky enough to meet Nicci Brinkman my freshman year at BU, just a few weeks before COVID-19 sent us all home. After spending her sophomore year at home in California while I was on campus, I was excited to reconnect with Nicci at the beginning of this year. COVID made it a lot more complicated for the class of 2023 to find their place on campus, so I sat down with Nicci to talk about an organization that has become a significant part of her time here: Israeli Club at BU.
Q: How did you first get involved with ICBU?
A: After I went to one or two events freshman year, I knew I wanted to be involved. Once COVID happened, they needed new board members, so someone on board reached out to me and asked if I wanted to apply.
Q: What’s something you particularly like about being a part of ICBU?
A: I like being able to learn about different perspectives, and I feel like I get to express a less-vocalized perspective on Israel.
Q: What was your favorite event from this year?
A: I liked our welcome back event where we ate falafel and met new people interested in joining ICBU.
Q: What’s something you learned from being a part of ICBU?
A: As director of marketing, I was exposed to a lot of Israeli activism and new, interesting perspectives that relate more to mine. I liked being able to get involved with marketing in addition to just being a member, and I’ve also gotten to meet a lot of really cool people.
Q: Why did you choose to apply for the director of marketing position specifically?
A: My focus within my major (hospitality administration) is directly related to marketing, so I wanted to gain experience within an area I’m really interested in.
q: Plug an event!
A: Next semester, we’re going to have a lot of cool educational events that involve multicultural perspectives.
Q: Where do you see the future of the club going?
A: We’re going to try to focus on events that are educational and can help increase knowledge for anyone who wants to learn more about Israel.
Q: What’s your favorite city in Israel?
A: Tel Aviv!
Q: What’s your favorite Israeli food?
A: Falafel, maybe, but it has to be good falafel— but also everything else. Actually, wait, I change my answer every day.
The last thing I asked Nicci was what advice she would give to someone looking to get involved with ICBU, and she said, “come to our events next semester and follow our Instagram for event info!”
