This midterms season I came upon a new qualm I have with Boston University: the libraries.
When I first started here, I was shocked to realize the only real library space was Mugar. How could there only be one library for 17,000 students? This midterm season has highlighted the prominence of this issue. With only scattered study rooms in some dorms and academic buildings, space is seriously lacking.
I walked into the library the other day, ready to lock in and study, only to find it packed. I scoured three floors before finally seeing a possible seat and asking a girl to move her backpack off the chair so I could use it.
As everyone faces tests and big assignments this week, it’s crucial for us to have better studying options. Beyond the lack of space is the lack of library etiquette. You see people taking up multiple seats, deciding that their backpacks are people too and need to be treated as such. There are items sprawled across tables, taking up space that could otherwise be used by other people. You hear talking even in the silent parts of the library, with friends giggling amongst themselves as you try to focus on your work.
Finding the motivation to go to the library rather than rot in your dorm is hard enough, but knowing you will struggle to even find a spot to sit makes braving the windy weather so much less appealing. So, here is my official petition for a new library:Â
Dear Boston University,Â
Please find the money, as you did to build the huge Computing and Data Sciences building, to build us a new library. This is necessary for the success of your students and will make you look better as our grades improve in new studying conditions. I would also like to make a special request to put a Dunkin’ inside. Â
Thanks, Maya
