Taking a look around campus this semester, one might notice something new – and no, I’m not talking about the hordes of freshman faces. (Welcome, class of 2017!) BU made a lot of changes over the summer, some more obvious than others, but fear not! Here is your guide to all things new on campus this semester that will leave even the most newbie freshman feeling like a seasoned BU pro.
Kilachand Hall (the dorm formerly known as Shelton Hall) – The dorm I once called my home is now completely made over and totally chic. The lobby is a clean, fresh white that makes it seem more like the entrance of a hotel than of a college dorm. Shelton’s former dining hall space has been transformed into an equally blinding white study space, complete with comfortable chairs for those among us who prefer to lounge as they hit the books. The BU Facilities Management & Planning website notes the sustainability element of the new features, from cork floors to LED lights. The website also mentions the possibility of further changes to Kilachand in summer of 2014. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a full day spa.
SMG – Just when we all thought SMG couldn’t get any fancier, it went ahead and did just that. Behind the new look and feel of each floor is the addition of new classrooms and offices. The Frederick S. Pardee Management Library was also completely renovated; it now has new furniture and more offices for library staff.
Insomnia Cookies – Cookie lovers of BU, your prayers have been answered. Insomnia Cookies, started by a University of Pennsylvania student in the City of Brotherly Love and now operating branches as far away as Michigan and Illinois, has finally made its way to BU’s campus. Insomnia offers a wide variety of warm, soft cookies along with ice cream-cookie sandwiches and brownies. But the real draw is that they will deliver these treats right to your door as late as 3 a.m. Why are you still reading? Go order some cookies already!
New Balance Field – Tucked away in West Campus on the corner of Babcock and Ashford Streets, New Balance Field was completed this past August. The BU Facilities Management & Planning website states that, although initiated by a pledge from the New Balance shoe manufacturer primarily as a space for the BU Women’s Field Hockey team, New Balance Field is accommodating to a number of other sports. Enhanced by a number of sustainable features, the beautiful and spacious New Balance Field is sure to garner a crowd of Terriers come game time. Go BU!
