Tonight hundreds of actors, actresses, producers, and directors –along with a handful of random celebrities—will file into the Dolby Theatre for the 88th Academy Awards. Since the award show’s humble beginnings in 1929, there have been endless extravagant wardrobe choices, but here are a few of the most noteworthy.

Audrey Hepburn – 1954

The Hollywood poster woman at the time stole the show in a classic tea-length Givenchy dress.

Nicole Kidman – 1997

Kidman rocked the brightly colored, hand emboidered Christian Dior silk number, but she undoubtedly had the best accesory — Tom Cruise.

Dennis Rodman – 1997

No one really knows why he was in attendance, or what he was thinking when he decided to wear this colorful, Victorian inspired outfit accompanied with matching eyeshadow.

Björk-2001

The Icelandic musician shocked the world when she wore the infamous swan dress that has since become a pop culture icon and has been parodied countless times.

Halle Berry-2002

The Best Actress winner wore a gorgeous Elie Saab dress with stategic floral, mesh, and silk details that allowed her to enter Oscar history for her outfit choice and for being the first black woman to win Best Actress.

Gwyneth Paltrow-2002

The good girl shocked everyone by wearing a gothic influenced Alexander McQueen custom gown, and she received harsh criticism for her choice.

Salma Hayek-2006

When you think of this Latina bombshell, this is the dress that comes to mind. Salma donned an aqua Versace gown that became a trademark style for the actress.

Keira Knightley-2006

The British actress raised over $6,000 when she donated this dress to Oxfam, the leading anti-poverty charity in the UK, and that makes her an even more beautiful person, inside and out.

Zoe Saldana- 2010

In a year filled with lackluster neutral-toned dresses, Zoe stole everyone’s attention by wearing a stunning Givenchy Haute Couture masterpiece detailed with everything from ombré tones, ruffles, sparkle, and a high-cut slit.

Jennifer Lawerence-2013

JLaw made her Christian Dior gown memorable when she famously fell while walking up the stage steps to accept her award. This dress will unlikely be forgotten anytime soon thanks to the plethora of memes that followed suit.

Lupita Nyong’o-2014

This Prada ensemble gave everyone serious modern-day Cinderella vibes, and it truly was her fairytale evening because she won the award for Best Supporting Actress.
