Self Love Saturday: February Edition

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

Self-love and self-care are very important to me, and I try to apply them to my life daily. With classes and homework, however, this is sometimes difficult. This is how I came up with the idea of “self-love Saturday,” where I give myself all Saturday, every week, to do something that I love.

On Saturday, February 10th, I decided to spend my day taking pictures of friends. Photography is something that I have always been passionate about, but I never allow myself enough time to take photos, as there is always something more important or time-sensitive to do.

In 2014, I went to Panama with Broadreach, a program that leads trips all over the world, in a variety of focus areas. My focus was on digital photography, and this trip changed my life. I knew I loved photography, but after coming home from Panama, I took photos almost every day and threw myself headfirst into a blog that I didn’t even really know how to run. This all changed when I came to BU, however. Schoolwork took over my life, and I no longer had time to spend hours a day editing photos. The shoots I do now are rare, but always so fun.

For this particular shoot, I wanted to focus on primary colors. These bright hues have always mesmerized me in photos, and I love working with them. My models for this shoot were some of my closest friends; Bruna Giampietro, Mikaela Ty, and Maddy Mermelstein. We spent 3-4 hours walking around Fenway, taking pictures at tons of locations along the way.

My favorite part of the photography process is, without a doubt, the editing. I don’t know why, but opening up Lightroom or Photoshop and working for hours is so calming. Seeing a photo go from somewhat bland to bright and saturated is such a good feeling, and I love that I can change my shots to meet my standards.

I can honestly say that this was one of the most relaxing Saturdays I have ever had. I spent good time with friends, drank WAY too much coffee in order to stay up late editing, and took some pictures that I am really proud of.

I am hoping to spend more of my weekends taking photos, and now that I have started a photography Instagram, I feel more motivated than ever.
