As the weather starts to get warmer, it may be tempting to go buy a whole new wardrobe to replace your winter puffers and turtlenecks. But, we’re all broke college students, so that’s probably not the best idea. There are tons in your closet that will prove essential for this weather transition period from winter to spring. Here are some of my best tips:
1. Wear your winter tops with spring bottoms!

We’re in a weird in-between phase with the weather where it’s not exactly cold, but also not warm. Pair your winter sweaters and knits with spring bottoms such as denim skirts, culottes, and printed midi-length skirts to get the best of both worlds.
2. Exchange your puffers for lighter jackets.
While puffer jackets can be extreme fashion statements, they will still keep all the warmth in, which is not ideal as the weather starts to get hotter. You can still make a statement without winter jackets with different materials, patterns, and styles. I recently thrifted a leather coat and a muted neon yellow Calvin Klein blazer, which add so much to just some jeans and a white t-shirt.
3. Wear lighter and more colorful items
The best way to physically show that you’ve left the dreary winter behind is by wearing lighter and more colorful items. A simple way to achieve this would be to, rather than wear dark denim, try light-washed, or even white, jeans. I’m sure you all have that one piece in the back of your closet that you’re too scared to wear because it may seem a bit too out there. With the warmer weather, people are going to start being even more bright and bold, so you should too! For me, that piece is a bright purple blazer with shoulder pads. I’ll show you mine if you show me yours.
4. Swap out your clunky winter boots for some sandals!
Not only are sandals super comfortable, but also make any outfit look effortlessly chic. While strappy sandals and slides are still very much in trend, the kitten heel is going to be all the rage this spring. A comfortable, yet sexy, way to elevate any outfit.
Retire the puffers and rain boots, but don’t get rid of everything. The best way to clean out your closet for the spring weather is to just recycle and restyle your winter basics! You have everything you need. So, don’t let them build up dust over these next few months — wear them!
