Avocados, Stop Playing Hard to Get!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bucknell chapter.

Among the super foods, there is one that is superior to them all.  It is the pearl to every sandwich and the golden nugget to every salad.  If you are clueless about the food hierarchy, then I suppose I must tell you that I am talking about the avocado.  It does more than just make your hair shiny and your skin glow.  The avocado breaks cultural boundaries and brings people together. When the avocado met the tomato and did a dance with a little lime and onion, a magical thing called guacamole was put on this earth.  This made the Super Bowl, and every other gathering, significantly better.  And then something tragic happened: the avocado shortage.

Scientists at Lawrence Livermore National Lab did a study and found some depressing results.  Because of California’s drought, the scientists predict that there will be a forty percent drop in California avocado production in the next thirty years.  If you weren’t concerned about climate change before, the lack of avocadoes will surely make you a Green Party advocate.

In an interview with the NY Daily News, restaurant consultant Clark Wolf says restaurants will have to be creative in coming up with new dishes.  He says that he expects “humus with pomegranate arils” to be the next substitute.  Translation: hummus is trying to be the step mom that attempts to take the place of your real mother, guacamole.  It’s just not the same.

With Cinco de Mayo coming up, I fear the future.  Sure, the campus will have festivities, but there will be an avocado shaped hole in the holiday.  In order to understand just how guacamole-centric the holiday is, simply Google “Cinco De Mayo”.  This is what you will find:

See what I mean?  THERE IS NO PARTY WITHOUT THE GUAC.

So, besides a devastating holiday, what does this shortage mean for avocado lovers? It means that the price of our dearly beloved is going to hurt the bank account.  Currently, prices are at $26 a case and are expected to double by summer time.  Will I go broke due to the soaring price of avocados?  Probably.  Will it be worth it?  Absolutely.
