First Lady Fashion

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bucknell chapter.

On Tuesday, November 6, President Barack Obama was reelected as President of the United States of America. This reelection meant not only a continuation of his role as the commander in chief of this country, but also gave us four more years of gushing over the first lady’s fashion sense. Michelle has true fashion sense, but she is not the only best dressed first lady the United States has seen; here are a few of the most fashionable first ladies.

Grace Coolidge

First and foremost is First Lady Grace Coolidge. She was the United States’ leading lady from 1923 to 1929. She effortlessly incorporated the fashion trends of the time into her assemble. Instead of more conservative garments, she took the roaring 20’s by storm wearing flapper-inspired dresses and pearls. She also loved bold color choices and was brave enough to take fashion risks while still remaining White House appropriate.

Jackie Kennedy Onassis

It is no surprise that Jackie O is on this list. Her fashion style is still noted today for her keen taste and colorful ensembles. A few of the many fashion trends that Jackie set were sleeveless A-line dresses, white jeans which she combined with black turtlenecks, hermes scarves, large dark sunglasses and pearl necklaces. Her trendsetter ways are still noted today and set a high bar for first ladies to follow. Jackie is remembered for her style, beauty, intelligence and grace.

Nancy Reagan

Throughout the 1980s, this actress turned first lady brought elegance and flair to the White House. Nancy’s style is often compared to that of previous First Lady Jackie Kennedy. However, she holds her own. Her wardrobe was full of luxury designer pieces including favorites James Galanos and Oscar de la Renta. Rumor has it that her inaugural events wardrobe cost $25,000! This first lady is also known for her favorite color, red. Nancy wore this color, calling it “a picker-upper.” It quickly became known as “Reagan red.” Her fashion sense was apparent throughout Ronald’s term and has continued on long past his presidency.

Michelle Obama

Last but not least is the reigning first lady, Michelle Obama. Over Barack’s first presidential term, Michelle has been praised for her style, incorporating both high-end fashion pieces with lower cost H&M and JCrew apparel. Michelle Obama has certainly held up the tradition of White House style, being honored as one of Vanity Fair’s “10 of the World’s Best Dressed People,” as well as appearing on magazine covers including “Vogue” and “Better Homes and Gardens.” Besides her strong fashion sense, Michelle launched Lets Move!, a campaign that aims to bring community leaders, teachers, doctors, nurses, moms and dads together in a nationwide fight against childhood obesity. It is clear that this first lady has fashion sense and a vision for this country.

Sarah Dubow graduated from school in 2013 and is a Digital Strategist at Marina Maher Communications in New York City. After serving as Campus Correspondent at Bucknell University, she is so excited to continue being a part of the Her Campus team! Besides traversing the city and trying to figure out what being a "real person" really means, Sarah loves long walks on the beach, sipping pina coladas, and getting caught in the rain (kidding!). Real favorites include traveling, writing, kickboxing, and making up ridiculous lyrics to the latest songs. She absolutely loves anything that involves cupcakes, butterflies, glitter, and anything Parisian and specializes in baking with far too much chocolate and obsessively watching shows bound to be cancelled after the first season. Though the long term path for this post-grad collegiette remains unclear, she's looking forward to all the new 20-something adventures that await her!  Â
