I Watched Every Vogue Beauty Secrets YouTube Video and This Is What I Learned

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bucknell chapter.

Over the past week, I have watched and rewatched all of the Vogue Beauty Secrets YouTube videos. With 199 episodes available free to the public, these beauty secret videos act as a guide for the hottest tips and tricks of skincare and makeup. Celebrities film an explanatory routine for whatever occasion they want, sometimes even giving the inside scoop on professional tricks from their makeup artists. The videos range from Gigi Hadid’s post pregnancy tips, to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s signature red lip tutorial, to Alicia Keys wellness-inspired routine. No matter what kind of look you are going for, there is a beauty secret video to guide you.

After watching all of the videos, I made a collection of the most popular techniques. Here are the most popular makeup and skin care techniques from some of the most iconic celebrities:

  1. Eyebrows

Almost every single video emphasized keeping natural, messy brows. Celebrities like Olivia Wilde, Adriana Lima, Hailey Bieber, Madison Beer, and Gigi Hadid talked about how big, fluffy, and full brows are always a good look. They all recommended throwing out your tweezers, avoiding waxing, and keeping your brows natural.. Madison provided her tutorial for “soap brows”, which is a technique involving a brow brush, a little bit of water, and regular bar soap to brush up your brows. Your brows will be locked in place while having that full and natural look.

  1. Highlighter

A natural glowy look is something all of the celebs strived for and their key to achieving it is with highlighter. They recommended applying it on the upper cheek bones, upper lip, brow bone, inner corner of the eye, and even collarbones! According to the celebrities, highlighter is the perfect way to make you shine when the light hits you! The queen of make up herself, Rihanna, went above and beyond by recommending body shimmer to give you a fully illuminated look.

  1. Applying Products

Everybody wonders how celebrities remain so youthful looking and the secret is in how they apply their products. The celebs applied their make up very gently with the tips of their fingers. Candice Swanepol explained that applying makeup with your hands not only allows the make up to go on easier and set on your face better, but it is also gentle on your skin and helps to avoid creating fine lines and wrinkles.

  1. Serums and Oils

Adding on to the secret for long lasting youthful skin is serums and oils! Whether they had oily, combination, dry, or sensitive skin, almost all of the celebrities incorporated some type of serum into their everyday skincare routine. Women like Gwyenth Paltrow, Sydney Sweeney, and Emma Chamberlain said that finding and using the right serum was one of the most important parts in their skincare routine.

  1. Multi-use Products

One of the biggest tips I saw for creating a seamless makeup look was using the same product for more than one area. Rihanna uses her face bronzer on her eyes as a way of warming up her eyes to blend with the rest of her face. Kim Kardashian does the same thing to give her a natural bronzed look. Celebrities also did the same thing with blush and lipstick; They would apply their lipstick to their cheeks as blush, or their cream blush to their lips as lipstick.  Drew Barrymore says this technique gives you a correlation of the color of your face!

  1. Contouring

The last tip is arguably the most important. Contouring is a fairly new trend that involves using certain products in certain areas of your face to give you a snatched look. Celebrities recommend applying darker contour on your cheekbones, top of your forehead, under the chin, and sides of the nose. However, Rihanna brought up an important point in her video, saying that you need to contour your face, for your specific face. There is no “right” way to do it.

I’ll leave off by saying that while these are the biggest recommendations from celebrities, there is no “one size fits all” for make-up. They all recommend experimenting with different techniques and finding what works best for you!
