This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bucknell chapter.
How did you first become involved with Be Fashion?
I wanted to work on a Bucknell publication because I thought that it would be fun and would add to my experience. I was particularly interested in writing and editing. When I was considering my options, I decided not to choose a literary magazine because, as an English and comparative humanities double major, I don’t think that it would have offered me an experience that was very different than my classwork. My good friend was (and still is) on the Be staff and I got to talking with her about it. Before I knew it, I was being interviewed by her and the current editor-in-chief. I started out as a contributing editor during my sophomore year.
What is it about this magazine that sets it apart from other publications on campus?
The most obvious difference is the staff. When a group of people get together and create a publication, they produce something unique and creative. The nature of our magazine allows us to be creative in print and photos. It takes a lot of different people to make a cohesive magazine, and the Be staff does an excellent job with that, in my opinion. Because we sell ad space to and borrow clothes for photo shoots from downtown businesses, we constantly interact with Lewisburg. Instead of sponsoring a couple of events per academic year, we connect with Lewisburg year-round. I think that we are a bit on the new side when it comes to Bucknell publications, so we are really starting to develop relationships with other campus groups. It’s an exciting time to be a part of Be!
How do you keep the magazine on-trend and fashion forward while staying unique to Bucknell?
Most of us stay up-to-date with current trends, but I have to give a lot of credit to our Creative Director and Fashion Team! I rely on them a lot, since they follow trends closely and love every minute of it. They communicate back and forth about the vision of the magazine and the nature of the shoots. The Fashion Team is responsible for perusing downtown stores and finding clothes that exemplify current trends. They find plenty of cool and unique items in these stores that aren’t sold everywhere else.
Where do you see the magazine going in the coming semesters?
As I mentioned, we are a growing publication and are interacting more and more with other groups on campus. For example, we just did a two-page spread with BASA and are planning on co-sponsoring a clothing swap with the Environmental Club. We also recently added a Creative Director to our staff positions. As of now, we are defining that position and also really focusing on developing our PR team. In the past couple of years, we’ve started to assign themes to each issue. There’s been some tweaking with every issue, and I think we’ve reached a great point where the theme is present, but not overwhelming. I hope that this continues in the future. And of course, the trends will change!
Who is your style icon?
My style icon is Eva Longoria. I’ve always been drawn to her. I think that she knows exactly how to pull off anything from jeans and a shirt to an extravagant evening gown. My goal is to achieve the same kind of ease in wearing anything.
