Meet the Bucknell Basketball Team: Brian Fitzpatrick

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bucknell chapter.

Feeling a little nostalgic now that the Basketball season is over? Fear no more! Here is another interview from another great player!

Brian Fitzpatrick, this member of the junior class, is a forward for the men’s basketball team. He comes from Connecticut and is currently double majoring in History and Psychology.

Q: How did you first begin playing basketball?
A: I started in kindergarten. I was always interested since my dad played in high school. I used to be a swimmer but I chose basketball because it was more fun.

Q: Was Bucknell your first choice? Were you recruited?
A: I was at UPenn for a year but due to certain events involving basketball, I decided to leave. There were a lot of recruiting opportunities and since I was familiar with Bucknell, I decided to come here. This was my first year playing with the team.

Q: How do you find the student-athlete life to be?
A: It’s challenging but you make it work. Basketball is an all year-round sport but if you love it, it’s not that bad. November is a particularly difficult time since there’s a lot of travelling on top of all the finals.

Q. Balancing academic and social life?
A: We can’t join Greek life but we still go out when we can. If we do win and we’re home, we go out on a Saturday night. We end up going out more during the Spring semester.

Q: How do you prepare for a game?
A: I listen to my iPod – I usually listen to a motional talk.

Q: Embarrassing rituals?
A: Not really…During the Patriot League, for every game before the minute game everyone had to dance. The freshmen went first and then at the last game, Bryson went by himself. That was kind of embarrassing for me.

Q: Most memorable moment/game?
A: I have never played in a championship game at the magnitude of the Patriot League Championship series.

Q: What motivates you?
A: Just trying to be the best I can be. I also wanted to prove people wrong because my high school coach had told me that I wouldn’t be able to play Division 1.

Q: What do you find most difficult?
A: It’s difficult having to stay on campus all the time. We’re even here during breaks – I went home for two days during Winter Break. It’s rough but I love basketball so it’s not that bad.
Q: Do your parents come visit often then?
A: Yes, but it’s difficult since all five of my siblings play sports.

And the questions you were hoping we would ask…

Q: Are you single?
A:  Yes

Q: Are you looking for a girlfriend?
A: Not really…

Q: Any celebrity crush?
A: I don’t know if you’ve heard about her. There’s this girl named Kate Upton who was discovered in a YouTube video doing the Dougie. It was not a spectacular dance but there was this “it” factor that kind of just got everyone excited. She seems really cool. I also want a girl who’s really tall and she’s 5’11.

Q: What do you look for/like in a girl?
A: I mean, height definitely helps. I just want someone who’s laid-back, intelligent, and she doesn’t have to know a whole lot about sports but I would like her to be at least interested in Basketball.

Q: What don’t you like in a girl?
A: A girl who’s a bit needy, and has a weird voice.

Q: What are some other hobbies/sports/interests?
A:  I really like music, the oldies such as the Goo Goo Dolls, U2, and I’m a bit of a softie for country music.

Q: What’s something unique about you that people may not know?
A: I have a Irish dual-citizenship because I want to try and play overseas later.

Q: What are three words that describe you as a boyfriend
A: I never had a girlfriend but I think I would be loyal, supportive, and just an overall good guy!

Q: Ideal date
A: Going to a live game would be fun!
