In this day of hundreds of streaming platforms, Netflix and Hulu have managed to stay on top as two of the best. However, with these services now releasing exclusives, as well as original movies and television shows, you can’t have one without the other. Since each platform offers a different variety of content, I’m taking a look at the three best and most underrated movies and TV shows from each.

NETFLIX

#1 – New Girl – 7 Seasons

Great for some wholesome comedy

Zooey Deshanel plays a quirky teacher who moves in with three men she met via craigslist… what could go wrong? New Girl serves as the show that I’ve seen maybe a thousand times, but can always come back to and find something different to laugh at. Five different personalities crammed into a TV show can potentially be difficult, but New Girl’s hilarious dialogue and acting never fails to make me smile.

#2 – Big Mouth – 2 Seasons

Great for a nostalgic laugh and some raunchy comedy

Packed with a powerhouse cast, Big Mouth details the lives of five awkward middle school students. Discussing topics such as puberty, sex, girls, periods, and annoying parents, Big Mouth manages to educate its audience while keeping the humor light and sometimes a little raunchy. If you’re looking for something hilarious and relatable, this show is perfect.

#3 – Schitt’s Creek – 4 Seasons on Netflix

Great for quotes you can whip out at a moment’s notice… “EW, DAVID!”

Perhaps the most underrated show on my list is Schitt’s Creek: a story of a wealthy family who lose their fortune and are forced to move to a small, rural town complete with quirky townspeople and questionable living conditions. The greatest part of Schitt’s Creek is Emmy nominated Katherine O’Hara as Moira Rose: wife, mother, fashionista, and town council representative.

HULU

#1 – Law and Order: Special Victims Unit – 20 Seasons

Great for a chilling glimpse into the American judicial system – Not for the faint of heart

DUN DUN. While not exactly underrated, SVU is by far my favorite crime show. Telling the story of a Manhattan-based sex crimes unit, SVU is packed with an amazing cast, heart-wrenching stories, and real life truths. And because Hulu houses twenty spectacular seasons, be ready for a never-ending binge.

#2 – The Act – 1 Season

Great for a weekend binge

Perhaps one of the most chilling true crime stories, The Act details the life of Gypsy Rose Blanchard, and the murder of her mother DeeDee. I won’t go into specifics, but Joey King’s portrayal of Gypsy Rose is particularly unnerving.

#3 – Love Island UK – 5 Seasons

Great for meaningless reality television, a laugh, and amazing accents

Ah, Love Island. Perhaps a Bachelor in Paradise on steroids, Love Island hosts around fourteen “sexy singles” in its villa for the summer. Forced to share beds, go on dates, and even babybird food into each other’s mouths, the couples of Love Island became almost an overnight sensation in the USA.
