I have the privilege of being in the training process of becoming a SpeakUp peer here at Bucknell. SpeakUp is an organization at Bucknell that works to educate and prevent interpersonal violence. SpeakUp’s annual Sex Positivity Week will be taking place next week from Monday February 13- Friday February 17. Sex Positivity Week is aimed to celebrate and educate on topics including sexuality and interpersonal relationships, among others. Any and all members of the Bucknell community are welcomed and encouraged to attend all of these events!

To kick off Sex Positivity Week, on Monday in the Gallery Theater (located on the third floor of the ELC) there will be a documentary viewing of Naughty Books, a film on female erotica authors. The documentary follows three women who, in less than a year, turn millionaires by selling erotica literature online. These women were inspired by the novel “Fifty Shades of Grey” and entered the industry of literature aimed at sexual arousal. This event is a collaboration with the Women’s Resource Center.

Following, on Tuesday, the LGBTQ+ Resource Center is collaborating with SpeakUp and hosting a book club in the Arches Lounge (located on the third floor of the ELC) from 7:00-8:30 pm. The novel is titled “Ace: What Asexuality Reveals about Desire, Society and the Meaning of Sex” and written by Angela Chen; the LGBTQ+ Resource Room has books available for pick up! Chen dives into what being asexual is like in a society consumed by sexual desire, and explores desire and identity through the Ace perspective.

Next, on Wednesday, the “I <3 the Female Orgasm” presentation will be taking place in the ELC Forum (room 272) from 7:00-8:30 pm. “I <3 the Female Orgasm” is a program created by ‘Sex Discussed Here!’; this team provides informative and humorous sex education programs across colleges and other venues in the United States. This presentation will be an educative, interactive, and inclusive experience revolving around the orgasm of female owners. There will be “I <3 the Female Orgasm” merchandise available to purchase at the event!

Furthermore, GSA will be hosting “Be My Trixy Valentine: an Inclusive Sex Education Presentation” which will take place from 6:00-7:00 pm in the Gallery Theater. Trixy Valentine is a well-established Drag Queen in the North Eastern PA area, and they host queer-inclusive sex education programs! Their given name is Jacob Kelley and they are a non-binary sex educator who specializes in LGBTQ+ inclusive content for rural youth. They also have a podcast called “Juicy with Jake.”

To conclude Sex Positivity Week, the Vagina Monologues will be taking place on Friday evening from 7:30-9:30 pm. This event will be co-hosted by the Center for the Study of Race, Ethnicity, and Gender, the Office of Interpersonal Violence Prevention and Advocacy, and the Women’s Resource Center. Vagina Monologues is also a fundraiser for the Transitions of PA; the Transitions of PA “is a crisis center that provides advocacy, empowerment, and education to victims, survivors, families, and communities to end patterns of violence and abuse.” Vagina Monologues gives women the power and opportunity to talk about several topics such as personal experiences, femininity, body hair, female oppression, and many more. This night is aimed to be empowering and educational while creating a strong and aware community for women.

Sex Positivity Week is a fabulous resource for education and celebration for Bucknellians- I am really looking forward to it, and hope to see many faces there :)
