Bucknell’s campus is one that is always jam-packed with exciting things to do and see. Whether it be concerts or sporting events to attend, speakers to see, campaign events to join in on, or anything else, there is always a wealth of options. As the year comes to an end, let us take a look at some major events that occurred each month here at the Buck.
August: The end of August was an exciting time as the first year students arrived, welcomed by the Orientation Staff clad in orange and blue.
September: Avicii was announced to perform at Fall Concert, marking the first big concert of the year. However, Avicii canceled, leaving many fans and ticketholders in frustration.
October: In October, the “We Do” campaign really got rolling as Homecoming was just around the corner. Let us not forget the tent that spanned across the entire academic quad, opening its doors only for faculty and alumni. One could say that this year’s Homecoming was rather “in-tents.” In addition, Avicii was rescheduled to perform on October 30. However, in central Pa. style, dear old Hurricane Sandy hit and put everything on hold for a few days, including our long-awaited Avicii concert.
November: Bucknell was transformed into a politically aware campus as students spent the beginning half of this month following the election and determining the country’s fate by voting for the future president. On the night of the election, all students were in their buildings, eyes glued to the television.
December: December was a time where everyone was preparing for the end of the world, in accordance to the Mayan calendar. This became such an ordeal that NASA was prompted to address people’s concerns. Associate Professor of Physics and Astronomy Ned Ladd said, “The world will end, just not this month.”
January: After an exciting and much needed winter break, students returned to campus eager for another busy semester. On January 10, Bucknell Alumni Bill Westenhofer was nominated for an Academy Award for his work in the film “Life of Pi.” On January 22, he came to the Campus Theatre and spoke about his time post-Bucknell in the entertainment industry.
February: In February, the SAT scandal was the talk of the town. Early this month, the University received a phone call saying that its information about SAT scores had been misreported for the past seven years. Because this was such a controversial topic, very few people know about the phone call President Bravman received next. An anonymous couple called to share sentiments about the scandal, similar to ones President Bravman had received in numerous emails. But then, they pledged $10 million to Bucknell, wanting to assist as much as possible during a challenging time for the University.
March: There ain’t no party like a Bucknell party. House Party was finally here and students eagerly returned from Spring Break in order to celebrate with friends and welcome the warm months ahead. Bucknell basketball also consumed the majority of this month. We made it to March Madness once again, but made it back out as quickly as we made it in.
April: On April 2, Olympic gold medalist Gabby Douglas spoke in the Weis Center, and was interviewed by our very own Lauren Treene. Lupe Fiasco and Third Eye Blind came for the Spring Concert and left Bucknell with mixed reviews. While Third Eye Blind gave a riveting performance, Lupe left much to be desired when he walked offstage after a brief time refusing to finish his performance.
May: Finals are here and most of the student body can be found in the library busting out pages and pages of reading and writing. Unfortunately, the beginning of this month marked the first consistent time of nice weather, leaving students torn between playing outside studying inside. BSG also announced that they are bringing froyo to Bucknell this fall. Underclassmen are excited to return to the Buck in August for another sweet year!
