Spring Break Alternatives

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bucknell chapter.

Woops! As you’re daydreaming about spring break instead of studying for that midterm exam, you realize: you have no plans for spring break. Or, your plans may have just fallen through and you are now scrambling to make some fun plans for this short but glorious break. Whatever the case may be, we got your back, girl. Here are some alternative spring breaks and last-minute (affordable!) ideas.

Volunteer

Contact the Office of Civic Engagement to find out about any service spring break trips that you might be able to participate in. You can also serve your local community by volunteering at a soup kitchen, homeless shelter, a school in need. You could also offer your time and service to a local family or neighbor who could really benefit from your help. Give up some of that down-time to serve the community – you won’t regret it!

Adrenaline Rush

For those brave souls out there, go feed your inner adrenaline junkie by visiting an amusement park or theme park — Six Flags in Jersey anyone? Get a group of your friends and go ride thrilling rollercoasters, stuff your faces with funnel cake and popcorn, and most importantly, beat the crowd! Many amusement parks are less crowded during this time and are definitely less crowded than the beaches!

Do (Learn) Somethin’ (yes, this is a reference to Britney Spears)

A week is a short time, but it’s long enough to start learning something new! Take some cooking classes, dance classes, pilates, or try out that hot yoga studio that everyone has been raving about. Be active during break — explore different activities that you have always wanted to try out.

Spontaneous Road Trip

Yeah, Cancun and Cabo sound nice but how about a short road trip with a small group of friends? This can be a cost-efficient solution to your wide-open spring break. Keep your destinations close and don’t limit yourselves to the big name cities! With a good amount of research, you might find a few interesting, overlooked, and underappreciated towns to explore.

School-Hop

This might be a no-brainer, but go visit your friends at other schools! Not all of us have spring break at the same time, so this is a perfect time to go visit a different campus for a weekend. See what they offer and how they measure up to the good ol’Buck.

The Last-Minute Getaway

Okay, if you are still interested in finding a getaway, check out the online deals. Stalk Groupon or use sites like Airfarewatchdog to see if you can find a sweet deal to the destination of your choice. But a word of warning, if you are still interested in planning a complete getaway, you better start now, and make sure you have a well-detailed itinerary! May the odds be ever in your favor. ;)

Sarah Dubow graduated from school in 2013 and is a Digital Strategist at Marina Maher Communications in New York City. After serving as Campus Correspondent at Bucknell University, she is so excited to continue being a part of the Her Campus team! Besides traversing the city and trying to figure out what being a "real person" really means, Sarah loves long walks on the beach, sipping pina coladas, and getting caught in the rain (kidding!). Real favorites include traveling, writing, kickboxing, and making up ridiculous lyrics to the latest songs. She absolutely loves anything that involves cupcakes, butterflies, glitter, and anything Parisian and specializes in baking with far too much chocolate and obsessively watching shows bound to be cancelled after the first season. Though the long term path for this post-grad collegiette remains unclear, she's looking forward to all the new 20-something adventures that await her!
