Tips for Freshman who will be entering college in the Fall
Â

Experience. A lot of times people say that they hate the environment and the school simply because it is not what they are used to. I know when I came to Buffalo I absolutely hated it. The reason why was because it was nothing like New York City and it felt more isolated. It was not until sophomore year when I because to really dive in and learn about the culture in Buffalo that I actually began to like it. If one does not experience the location, they won’t actually grow to like it. In life, we have to adapt to different things and places in order to grow.

Do not procrastinate. Many students think that college will be similar to high school. As in, only having to read 30 pages of the textbook or book for the week and only doing a final project. But college is a completely different story. Literally on the first day of classes, you will be handed a syllabus and will have some kind of assignment due the following class or week. Usually it will be a load of pages and chapters to read, a paper, or some work specific to the class. Another thing that students who are entering high school do not realize is that on the first day of class, after the professor goes over the expectations and syllabus, there will be a lecture.

Join organizations. Join different organizations or clubs on campus. That could be another reason why one does not like the school. If you get more involved, there is a higher possibility that the experience will be better.

-
Major/Minor. It is okay to be undeclared or not know what you want to do. By joining clubs or organizations that you have interest in, it can really help decide what you want to major on. A lot of people will tell you that you need to know what you want to major in but as long as you declare your major before sophomore year, you will still be on track to graduate on time.

Take at least five classes per semester. If you take less than that, two things can come from it. You will either lose any financial aid you have received because you are not a full time student (12 credits or more) or you might graduate late. In order to graduate, you need a certain amount of credits and if you are taking the bare minimum, it will really take a toll on when you’ll graduate.

-
Enjoy yourself. College is not all about work. You do not need to spend every hour of everyday doing wor. It is important to get work done but you also need time for yourself. Take time out to hang out with friends, stay active, and basically have fun. You deserve to treat yourself.

Midterms and finals. Those two weeks alone will really take a toll on one’s body and mind. But do not let it get the best of you. Make sure you study, eat healthy and a good meal, get enough sleep, and relax when you can. If you wear yourself out physically, you’ll also be drained mentally.
Just be sure to make your college experience fun!
