Reasons to Stay Alive This Week

We all need things to look forward to. Getting through a tough week can feel almost impossible when there doesn’t seem to be a light at the end of the tunnel. A month ago, I was struggling to see that light. I had just been assigned my first lesson plan and I felt totally unprepared. How was I supposed to teach something? Was I in the right major? Did I need to change everything in my life around? When I got back from class that day, I couldn’t think of a single thing that I was looking forward to. Everything was just overwhelming.

I took the rest of that day off from class, from talking to people, and just watched Netflix and let my mind have a break. The next day, I had an idea. I have a little whiteboard that hangs right above my desk, and usually I just use it to write things that I find funny throughout the week. But I was feeling a little extra appreciative of my mom and my friends, and I figured it would be nice to be able to look up from what I was working on to see some reminders of why I should keep going. And so was born my “Reasons to Stay Alive This Week” list!

Every time I think about something I love, or remember something I’m looking forward to, I write it on the board. Right now, the board has Nick Miller from New Girl, sunshine, Taco Bell, my roommate Kathleen, and Spring Break written on it. I’ve erased the board every Sunday and it’s been so nice to keep that light at the end of the tunnel in mind. I’ve noticed that I’m having more fun and staying more positive since. So go forth and create your own little whiteboard of things you like! I will now insert a gif of Nick Miller that will hopefully make you as happy as it makes me.
