Firefighters, princesses, zombies, and witches filled Main Street the night of Halloween. This wasn’t the typical college students who dressed up all of Halloweekend, but the kids who have tried on their costume ten times before the big day had arrived and picked out their bags knowing it would have to hold at least 2 pounds of candy.
From 6-8 p.m. on Main Street, all the Greek organizations on campus took a step back from their long weekend of celebrating to pass out candy to the Mount Pleasant families. Children of all ages ran up and down the streets stopping at all the houses with Greek letters on the front. The fraternities and sororities paired up with one another and contributed to giving back to the city.
“It was exciting to re-live my childhood memories and remember how fun Halloween used to be as a kid. All I used to think about was how much candy I had in my pillowcase and what I was going to trade my sister when I got home,” said Delta Zeta, Erin Kelly.
In the spirit of Halloween, all the houses decorated their porches with spider webs, pumpkins, and Monster Mash playing in the background. Not only was the house decorated but so were the students passing out candy. Tay Jackson, Senior, member of Sigma Chi, rented a Big Bird costume from the local Halloween store to be more in spirit when passing out candy.
“We were really able to show the community that we care and want to give back,” said Bethany Dickerson, member of Zeta Tau Alpha, “Greeks can get the wrong representation sometimes, but this is what being Greek is about and being able to do this on Halloween was just a bonus.”
The normal Main Street that’s packed on the weekends with stressed college students trying to have fun and relax was taken over by adorable fairy tale characters and little monsters for the night. It wasn’t only a fun night for the children of Mount Pleasant, but left the Greeks with a little taste of home and reminiscing on their childhood.
