What the Trees Have Taught Me: A Poetry Collection

Part I: The Death of Autumn and Me

In school, they always asked

Us to write poems about Autumn

This is when I was first taught

That when things are dying

The world sees it as beautiful

I guess this is why

I write so many tragedies

I’m hoping someone will find

Beauty in my suffering

Like they do as the leaves

Fall from the trees

And the death of autumn creeps in

Part II: The Weight of a Tree

When a tree trunk falls

So do the branches

The leaves

The fruit

Such a shame that one trunk

Is expected to hold up so much

Part III: A Lullaby to the Trees

It’s okay that you feel

A lack of warmth from within

Just focus on your leaves

And let the sunlight shine in

It’s okay that you feel

A little disconnected

Just focus on your branches

Reach for the love to be collected

It’s okay that you feel

Like you are unstable

Just focus on your sturdy trunk

You are strong and able

It’s okay that you feel

Hollow like a tree

Just focus on your roots

They’ll guide you back to me

Hi, my name is Tess and I’m a double major in Journalism and Women and Gender studies at Central Michigan University. Planning to become a media writer after I graduate. I want to empower people through my writing and hope to someday write a book on the intersection of Feminism and Paganism. I’m a huge crafter, I love knitting and altering clothes I find at thrift stores. I listen to a lot of audiobooks in my free time. I’m really excited to be co-campus correspondent and Editor-in-Chief for HerCampus-CMich and continue to develop my voice, writing and leadership skills.
