In honor and celebration for International Women’s Day on March 8th, here are four of the most empowering phrases that make me feel confident and like I can do anything that I set my mind to. This International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month, let’s all remember simply #girlpower!

“You’re strong, you’re a Kelly Clarkson song, you’ve got this” — Jonathan Van Ness

If you love the show Queer Eye on Netflix or just love Jonathan Van Ness (otherwise known as JVN), you live by this quote. I love this quote because it reminds me of how strong I am and that I can tackle whatever obstacles life will throw at me along the way — and I love “Stronger” by Kelly Clarkson!

“When they go low, we go high” — Michelle Obama

I love Michelle Obama so much and really look up to her and the leadership that she has shown not just to the U.S., but also to the world. On the Disney Channel growing up, she would speak about nutrition, the importance of incorporating exercise in your life, and how to stay healthy.

As a young adult, I look up to her as a woman who has done so many great things in her life despite her humble beginnings. This phrase reminds me that even though we might be belittled at times or not as strong, we always must remember to be the bigger person in any situation and learn to rise above it.

“Women belong in all places where decisions are being made… It shouldn’t be that women are the exception” — Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Arguably one of the most powerful women in modern history, Ruth Bader Ginsburg (also known as RBG) advocated for women’s rights during Roe v. Wade and is still a beacon and symbol of women’s rights across the globe.

“Beware; for I am fearless, and therefore powerful” — Mary Shelley

Mary Shelley, the novelist who wrote the classic Frankenstein, was one of the first women’s rights advocates. As a young writer, I look upon her confidence in writing one of the first horror stories ever and being one of the first innovators of Romanticism, which was a writing movement during the 1800s.

“Though she be but little, she is fierce” — William Shakespeare

One of the most powerful women characters in Shakespeare’s world, Hermia, says this phrase in the play in Act 3 Scene 2 of the famous play A Midsummer Night’s Dream. This phrase shows that even though women are sometimes belittled by society, especially during Shakespeare’s time, they are very strong and can do anything that they put their minds to.
