Brenna Knippen ’19

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at C of C chapter.

Name: Brenna KnippenYear: 2019Major: ArchaeologyHometown: Palatine, IL

Why did you pick CofC?: They have a great archaeology program and I love the historical atmosphere and different culture in Charleston.

What’s your dream dig site: Either Ephesus or Smyrna in the Aegean region of Turkey.

What is the coolest thing you’ve done so far?: Take a year off between high school and college to live in Turkey and study the language with a government scholarship.

Favorite thing about Turkey?: The hospitality and warmth of the people. And the history that’s just everywhere, it’s honestly inescapable.

How hard was it to learn turkish?: Turkish is really hard, the grammar is based on intentions so much more than English. So the meaning of words can be manipulated by just changing the grammar.

What’s the weirdest thing about yourself?: I’m a vegetarian and I am allergic to fish, but vegetable sushi is my absolute favorite food and I’d eat it all the time if i could!

Check out Brenna’s blog from her year in Turkey!

A Political Science and International Studies double major with a minor in Midddle East studies at College of Charleston.
