Charleston is Voted the Number One City… Again!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at C of C chapter.

Earlier this week world renowned travel magazine Conde Nast Traveler revealed their pick for the top five cities in the United States. In the number one spot was Charleston, South Carolina… for the fourth year in a row.

Beating out cities like Chicago, San Francisco, and New Orleans, our own little city has once again captured the hearts, eyes, and even stomachs of Americans everywhere.  It’s no wonder why travelers and locals alike can’t get enough of Charleston – it’s beautiful in so many ways. When College of Charleston students make the decision to attend the college, they more or less make the decision to immerse themselves in one of the best cities in the world.

In fact, not only is this Holy City, a name deriving from the plethora of churches downtown, the number one city in the United States, but it has also been named the number two city in the entire world, according to the Conde Nast Traveler’s 2014 Readers’ Choice Awards. Charleston was second only to the dreamy Florence, Italy, and received a higher rating than Rome, Barcelona, and Cape Town. So, what makes Charleston so special? Take a look below to find out some of the gems of this Southern city…

The food is some of the best in the world. Restaraunts like Husk and Hall’s Chophouse bring in celebrities and international foodies.

The landscape is diverse as it is beautiful. From hundred-year-old oak trees and lush plantations to gorgeous houses and the peaceful harbor, there’s plenty of opportunities to be overwhelmed with nature’s beauty.

The history is abundant and rich. Literature enthusiasts will find Edgar Allan Poe’s presence, and true American history buffs will discover the beginnings of the Civil War.

The hospitality is world-renowned. Charleston has been named the friendliest city by many, because it absolutely is. People smile at you even if they’ve never met you.

Well, those are just some of the things that make Charleston one-of-a-kind. The Charleston Visitors Bureau recently created a video that captures the essence of our beautiful little city. At 1:33 in the video, which is below, you’ll see the centerpiece of our charming College of Charleston campus, the Cistern Yard… and yes, the Oscar nominated film The Patriot was filmed there. On that note, come on down, ya’ll, and fall in love with a city unlike any other in the world.

While still uncertain of her career path, Angel knows that the field of Communication is where she is meant to be. Her love of words is evident in her writings and conversations. Because she knows the power, the beauty, and the pain words carry, she speaks and writes with care, and hopes that one day a string of words she threads together positively influences someone's life. Until then, she'll continue to bake, travel, and laugh her days away.Â
