Finding Your College BFF

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at C of C chapter.

Think back to your college orientation, whether it was just last summer or a few years ago. While it seemed like everyone else was already comfortable in this new and unfamiliar environment and making friends like their life depended on it, perhaps you felt uneasy and uncomfortable. Despite small talk and ice breakers, maybe you still were not able to cultivate friendships as easily as others. Because of this, the thought of returning to campus in August was becoming increasingly more nervewracking. “What if I never make friends? What if I hate it here? Did I make the right decision?” ran through your mind on the daily.

Pause.

Whether thoughts like these ran through your mind as an incoming freshman at orientation or a second-semester junior facing an unstable job market, everyone can relate. College can be a scary time – anytime. But, it is when one finds their college best friend that everything seems much less scary. Getting there, however, can be challenging. Here’s a look into the progression of finding one’s college BFF using GIFs.

You first lay eyes on each other. Accidental eye contact? Do you say anything? Should I turn away?

But then, one of you takes that leap of faith! Perhaps with a compliment. Compliments are good.

Over the next few weeks, you run into each other, sharing a word or two. Commence phone number exchange. Facebook friend invites. The works.

Before you know it, you’re getting coffee together and asking each other life advice.

Judging people is better with a friend, too. That’s where the true bonding happens. Oh, and inside jokes. Ya’ll are becoming inseperable.

PAAAARTYYYYYYY TIMMEEEE.  You each finally have someone who understands your party habits. Every single one of them.

Better yet, you’ve found someone to take care of you. To hold your hand when you cry and your hair when you’ve had too many drinks.

And someone who understands your weirdness.

It may have taken some time and some bad friendships, but now you’ve got each other. For life.

College of Charleston junior Angel Mathis is pursuing a BA in Communication with a double minor in Creative Writing and Tourism Management. While still uncertain of her career path, Angel knows that the field of Communication is where she is meant to be. Her love of words is evident in her writings and conversations. Because she knows the power, the beauty, and the pain words carry, she speaks and writes with care, and hopes that one day a string of words she threads together positively influences someone's life. Until then, she'll continue to bake, travel, and laugh her days away.Â
