Fun and Free Things to do in Charleston

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at C of C chapter.

Everyone knows that college students are constantly on a budget. But even if you’re eating ramen noodles every night to save money, that doesn’t mean you have to miss out on all of the wonderful, exciting things Charleston has to offer. This city has many fun things to do and see that are free of charge. These locations are all perfect places for either a relaxing day off or a night on the town. Plus, with the weather getting cooler and fall in our near future, now is the perfect time to venture out and see these places! You’ll be able to enjoy your time spent without the dreadful summer heat weighing you down. Save some money and upgrade your dinner to something more enjoyable than ramen with these free sights and locations!

The Angel Oak

Everyone knows that Charleston has great beaches. As the weather cools, there are also many fun outdoor activities, such as visiting the Angel Oak. This 65-foot historical landmark is 1,500 years old! Considered to be one of the oldest oak trees in America, this is something you must see at least once while living in Charleston. The beautiful, sprawling branches extend 160 feet, and the tree is totally instragram worthy. Located on John’s Island, the tree is about a twenty-minute drive from downtown.

The Magnolia Cemetery

Charleston’s rich history is just waiting to be explored, and there are many places that don’t charge admission. One of these places is Magnolia cemetery. The cemetery is filled with Civil War history. Located on the banks of the Cooper River, it was once a rice plantation. Now, it is the final resting place of many important names in southern history from governors such as Thomas Bennett to confederate generals like James Conner. It is just outside of the downtown area at 70 Cunning Avenue, Charleston SC.

Pour House

This super funky concert venue not only attracts some well-known musicians, but also offers free concerts on the weekends on their outdoor deck. While the free bands are lesser known than the indoor concerts, it’s a great way to discover new local bands without breaking the bank. Even if you decide to buy a ticket, prices usually don’t go above twenty dollars. Some upcoming concerts include Tea Leaf Green, Moon Taxi, and Donna the Buffalo. Located in West Ashley, the Pour House is just a short ride away.

Charleston Farmer’s Market

Every Saturday from April to December in Marion Square, enjoy the fresh produce from the low country at the Farmer’s Market. Produce changes weekly depending on what’s in season.  You can also enjoy the cheap eats many of the food trucks have to offer; my personal recommendation is the Charleston Crepe Company. Many vendors also sell handmade jewelry and other items, with a very distinct Charleston feel. These items can make perfect gifts for friends back home! There is also often live music and special events to be enjoyed as well. The Farmer’s Market is a great place to soak up the sun and enjoy some healthy food. It is perfect for a lazy Saturday morning.
