A Guide to Your Perfect Galentine’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at C of C chapter.
It is no unknown fact that Leslie Knope is an innovator and has more great ideas than the average person has in their entire life.

One of her best ideas could be classified as the best holiday, and definitely deserves to be nationally recognized. Galentine’s Day happens once a year on February 13th and is a way to show your best girl friends how much you appreciate them. This year, while you’re planning your romantic night with your boyfriend, go ahead and call all the women in your life who you love and tell them to keep their Friday night open. With these steps, you’ll be sure to give them a night they will always remember, and one that will definitely trump however they spend the 14th.

1. Make a special dinner, whether it’s reservations at O-ku or homemade tacos at your apartment, put in some effort to show the gals right away that this night is going to be good. But no calzones.

2. Drinks are a must on Galentine’s Day, so be sure to have the wine flowing freely. How else are you going to get the few non-single friends in your group to tell you how they really feel when their boyfriend does that one thing that you hate. If you’re cooking at your place, try out this recipe to combine the two best things in the world; wine and ice cream.

3. Now that everyone is sufficiently not sober, bring out the games. Feel free to break out whatever game you want, whether it’s a Poker or Settlers of Cataan. If you really want to get into the spirit, try this Galentine’s Day drinking game. Just try not to get too competitive; or do.

4. When Leslie does Galentine’s Day, she goes all out with a bouquet of hand-crocheted flower pens, a mosaic portrait of each of them made from the crushed bottles of their favorite diet soda, and a personalized 5,000 word essay of why they’re all so awesome. But I’m sure your friends would be fine with a bag of Hershey’s kisses. Either way, give them a little way to remember the night, and to show how much you love them.

5. If you and your friends are still going strong at this point, go out to the bars and snub any male attention you get. No boys allowed on Galentine’s Day. Or pop in a movie that empowers women, RomComs should take a backseat tonight.

However you and your friend’s decide to spend Galentine’s Day, make it special to really show them how much you appreciate them. Leslie Knope is a role model in many ways, but one of the things she did best was show her friends how much she loved them, which is exactly the point of Galentine’s Day.
