This week’s Campus Celebrity hails originally from across the pond! Harriet Collins was born and raised in England, but decided to attend College of Charleston after spending time visiting the city while vacationing at her family’s house in Hilton Head Island. I asked her some questions about adjusting to American living and about her life in general.
Year: Sophomore
Major: Psychology
Hometown: Olney, England
What has it been like going to college in America?
Although I spent most of my summers in America, it is definitely different living in a place than just visiting. I was surprised that the cultures could be so different, especially the little things that you wouldn’t even expect, like Sprite is called lemonade back home, but if you wanted American lemonade, you’d call it fresh lemonade.
What do you miss most about England?
Most of the things I miss are actually foods! I miss having roast dinners every Sunday, a proper cup of tea and biscuits, and English chocolate – Hershey’s just doesn’t measure up!
What are you involved with on campus?
I am a Vice President of my sorority, Delta Gamma, and I am also involved in the international club, which has just come back from being inactive.
What does an average day look like for you?
I have most of my classes in the mornings so usually I’ll get up, grab something to eat, and rush to class; after classes I almost always take a nap, then get some homework done and either hang out with my roommate or go meet up with friends.
What’s your favorite movie and tv show?
My favorite movie is probably ‘She’s the Man’ and my favorite tv show has got to be ‘Criminal Minds’- I’m obsessed!
Top song to dance to?
I’ve been told a bunch of times that my music taste isn’t the best, but I think my top dancing song would probably be “Get Low” by Lil Jon… Yes, I am that girl.
Who is your role model?
My mum is probably my biggest role model – she’s awesome. My celebrity role model is probably Hilary Duff – she was the only child star not to go crazy, and what’s not to love about her?
What is one thing you can’t live without?
I don’t think this is a fair question – there are loads of things I couldn’t live without: my family, my sisters, my friends, my cell phone, ice cream, Netflix…
Finally: any tentative plans after graduation?
I am hoping to stay in America and possibly go to grad school, but we’ll just have to wait and see!
