The story of Mothman is one that many people have heard of, but few know the full story. The legend takes place in Point Pleasant, West Virginia. On November 15, 1966, two couples saw a giant man with ten-foot moth wings and glowing red eyes. The four people said that Mothman was following their car while they were driving outside of the town. Soon, more and more people in the area begin to see the giant Mothman. Local reporters published a paper announcing, “Couples See Man-Sized Bird…Creature…Something.” The sightings soon led to national coverage of the story.
On December 15, 1967, the Silver Bridge, the bridge connecting Point Pleasant to Gallipolis, Ohio, collapsed. After the collapse, 46 people were found dead. Officials discovered that a single eyebar failed in the suspension chain. The failure was only half an inch deep. After the collapse, the sightings of Mothman stopped, leaving some people to believe that Mothman was involved with the Silver Bridge’s collapse.
In 1999, Mothman was sighted in Moscow, Russia. Not long after, over 300 hundred people died in an apartment bombing. Russian UFOlogists claim that Mothman’s presence foreshadowed the disaster, just like with the Silver Bridge. Â
Over the years, there have been many theories as to what exactly Mothman is or why he appeared before disasters. Some people claim that Mothman’s presence means that a disaster is about to strike, while other people believe that Mothman sabotaged the Silver Bridge. Either way, Mothman has not been seen in Point Pleasant since the bridge collapsed. Another popular theory suggests that Mothman was a government experiment that escaped and lived in a nearby military storage site.
Earlier in 2020, Mothman was spotted yet again. This time he was seen in Ohio in several different places. Mothman was seen a second time in 2020. As of October 27, 2020, Mothman has been spotted several times in Chicago, Illinois. The sightings have continued for several weeks now. The origin of Mothman still remains a much-discussed mystery, though that has not stopped people from being fascinated by the myth, and it has not stopped the sightings of Mothman either.   Â
