Red Carpet Double Take

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at C of C chapter.

It’s no secret fashion trends come and go in cycles as the years pass, but it seems the current decade is continuing to take hints from a not-so-distant old friend: the nineties.  Stores and red carpets alike are filled with high necklines, choker necklaces, power suits, ultra thin speghetti straps, croptops, and platforms.  This weekend celebrities embraced red carpet season with MTV’s Video Music Awards and the Primetime Emmy Awards – few attending both, many attending parties, all dressed to the nines.  Aside from a few notable slip-ups, there weren’t many looks that stood out.  The garments of all the women who hit the red carpets this weekend reflect a shift to more masculine, structured, and empowering shapes.  Two standout ladies, however, stole the scene at both presentations.

GWEN STEFANI

Gwen Stefani took on the VMA Red Carpet Sunday night wearing a structured two-piece, two-toned, belted bustier peplum top and pant combo from her very own clothing line, L.A.M.B.

Monday night, the artist ditched her trademark pinup swirl for straight, smooth locks to match her streamlined futuristic look for the Primetime Emmy Awards.  The two-piece Versace gown dowsed in Swarovski crystals, was an interesting choice for the Emmys and Stefani slays the scene.

SARAH HYLAND

Sarah Hyland was one of many showing off nineties trends with a new twist.  The high neckline pulls to a thin one shoulder spaghetti strap which morphs into a plunging geometric backline.  The KaufmanFranco gown is styled with a subtle new-goth makeup look, a sleek middle part, and strappy minimal Stuart Weitzman shoes.

The Modern Family actress completely flipped her look for the Emmys Monday night. Another two piece beauty, the nineties yet again pull through in this pristine croptop and coral ballgown skirt combination by Christian Siriano.
