How did you end up at College of Charleston?

Fate.  I came from a high school that had small class sizes and an intimate discussion based curriculum. The College of Charleston offers all of that, and it was a perfect fit!

What all are you involved in on campus?

I am involved with a lot on campus. I am a President of the Charleston Mentor Society, a Charleston 40 tour guide, a member of the Honor Board and a Peer Facilitator and on the Center of Excellence in Peer Education Exec Board. I also have worked as a Facilitator for Cougar Excursion and a Resident Assistant in the past.

Which campus involvement has impacted your life the most (or been your favorite)?

One of my favorite things to do on campus is to interact with incoming freshman and prospective students. My role as a Cougar Excursion facilitator, Peer Facilitator and a tour guide all allow me to interact with those two cohorts of students, and it is truly fulfilling for me to make some impact on their experience at CofC.

How has being a student leader benefitted you?

I believe its was my overlapping time as a Peer Facilitator and a Resident Assistant that helped me in shaping who I am as a leader. Often times as a leader you must make difficult decisions. Being self-aware and evaluating my role as a RA I discovered my role in that position was no longer beneficial to my growth. Though I truly loved being a RA, I felt as if I could not positively impact the students as a Resident Assistant as I hoped to.

I decided to focus all of my time on my role as a Peer Facilitator. Being apart of the FYE program as opened up many doors for me, allowed me to develop professional skills, and has given me the ability to continuously interact with freshman students in a constructive and productive manner.

What is your favorite memory from being at College of Charleston?

Picking just one memory is difficult! One of the memories that I often talk about is my trip to the United Kingdom with other peer educators on campus. We worked in an Express I course to prepare information about higher education and peer education in the United States. We traveled to different universities in the UK to present our information and learn more about the UK programs in higher education. We also were able to sight-see and experience the different cities. Lets just say we had a great time and learned a lot!

What are your plans for after college or your #LifeGoals?

I actually just found out I was accepted to Boston University’s School of Public Health to pursue my Masters in Public Health and I am waiting to hear back from a couple of other schools. It has been really great to have the option of public health as an undergraduate major, because not many universities provide their students that option. Being able to continue my education in a field of study I am passionate is a true blessing!

I have about 3 options for possible long-term goals for my career and life because it’s important to have multiple back up plans if something doesn’t work! One of my recent additions to my “goals list” is to become Secretary of Health and Human Services and be apart of the President’s cabinet.

What advice do you have for potential and underclassmen students?

Something that I often tell many freshman and prospective students is to really take advantage of the liberal arts curriculum that CofC affords you. As I mentioned I believe my path to CofC was fate. I originally was a chemistry major on a pre-dental track. However, it was my time spent in a global health class that sparked my interest in public health. Because I was able to take classes within different disciplines I was quickly able to discover my passion.

Take advantage of all your opportunities to learn and grow! You won’t regret it, I promise.
