About Time (2013) is my favorite rom-com to ever exist. The movie stars Domhnall Gleeson, who is famous for his role as Bill Weasley in Harry Potter and General Hux in the most recent Star Wars trilogy. Gleeson plays awkward and lovable Tim, who finds out that all the men in his family can time travel, but only to moments in their own life. He falls in love with the lovely Mary, played by Rachel McAdams, and fights for her love with his newly acquired time-traveling powers.
What is so amazing about this film is that while yes, he can time travel, we are never focused on how or why because the rest of the plot is just that good. Richard Curtis wrote and directed this film. You might recognize some of his other famous works like Love Actually (2003), Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994), and Notting Hill (1999). This man is pretty much an expert when it comes to blending romance and comedy into one seamlessly perfect plot.
I feel like a lot of movies that try to blend science fiction into romance ultimately fail because they focus too much on the science behind the time travel, but in this film, you are truly focused on the characters and their moments. While the story is centered around Tim and Mary, you also become so engrossed in the lives of the other characters who are all so painfully real and authentic.
You can stream this film on Netflix, or it can be rented on Amazon Prime!
