You may or may not already know it, but March is Women’s History Month, and the week of March 8 is National Women’s History Week. Women’s role in history is often overlooked, so it is important to shine a light on the many accomplishments made by women throughout history. In the spirit of the month, here are some awesome women you may not have heard of:
1. Melitta Bentz
When she found her morning drink too bitter, she solved her problem inventing the coffee filter. Next time you’re sipping on a Jazzman’s latte, be thankful for Melitta Bentz.
2. Harriet Jacobs
She wrote one of few known personal narratives written by an enslaved woman, entitled “Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl.” It helped white Americans, especially women, be aware of the evils of slavery by giving a firsthand account.
3. Jeannette Rankin
She was the first woman elected to Congress, serving two terms in the House of Representatives. She also helped pass the 19th Amendment, so think of her while casting your ballot.
4. Elizabeth Blackwell
She was the first woman in the United States, and in the world, to receive a medical degree, paving the way for many women to join the medical field after her.
5. Stephanie Kwolek
While researching synthetic fibers, she discovered a new one, which eventually was developed into Kevlar, the material used for bulletproof vests. Her discoveries are responsible for saving many lives.
There are many more women throughout history who have done amazing things, whether you’ve heard of them before or learned of them just this month. This March, make it a mission to pay attention to Women’s History Month and attend the events Cabrini offers. You just might learn something new.
