If you are looking for someone who is patient and kind and someone that will always make you feel positive, even when you do not have the slightest idea what you are doing in mathematics, David Madway is the man to talk to. Despite usually being in his office or in the math resource center, his positive energy and selflessness cannot be missed. Madway meets with many students each day outside of class, whenever they need help and whenever they request to do so.
Before arriving at Cabrini, Madway was an owner of a commercial and residential building supply business for 32 years. Madway said, “I found my passion for teaching early in my business career. I realized that a good manager must be a good teacher. Over the years, I’ve learned the importance of mentoring, patience, tolerance and persistence”.
This has proven true with his selfless attitude when it comes to setting aside his time, which is usually outside of class, for students who need additional help with math concepts.
Madway came to Cabrini College in 2013 and all of his students are sure glad he did! When he came here he said, “It is a privilege to join Cabrini College in the department of mathematics. I enjoy helping students understand why learning math is important and how it is used in their daily lives. Cabrini represents everything that is good about higher education: high-quality teaching in a caring environment.”
When asked about what he likes most about his job, he said, “Working with students, faculty and staff because I’m always learning from them.” Additionally, he says his favorite spot on campus is in front of any classroom. “It’s an opportunity to make a positive difference in someone’s life.”
Aside from being an incredible teacher and mentor, Madway holds a commercial pilot certificate and has been flying airplanes since he was 16 years old. He is married and lives with his wife in Pennsylvania. When asked who his role model is, he said, “My parents taught me to always try to do the right thing; my wife makes sure I don’t forget it.”
