5 Ways to Survive Studying for Finals

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cal Lutheran chapter.

Are you stressed out knowing that finals are coming up, and do you feel like there just isn’t enough time to study? Well here are some helpful tips to make studying a little less painful.

1.) Set an alarm in your phone for every hour to have a random dance break.

You don’t have to be a good dancer to break it down for the length of a single song. Dancing is a way to help you forget about the stress of studying and just let loose for a few minutes. I find that dancing helps me to refocus once the song is over because i’m loose and no longer fidgety.

2.) If your studying involves a lot of reading, put a sticky note with a positive saying on each page you will be reading.

By putting a positive note on each page you will be reading, it will be an added push to keep going. The note can be something as simple as, “you can do it” or “keep going you’re almost there.” These simple notes will help you to stay focused, and help you work toward your goal. When the notes run out, you know you’ve completed the pages you needed to.

3.) Plan an outing with your friends.

An outing can be something as simple as walking to Starbucks on campus with a friend to get your favorite drink. The fact that you are getting out of your bedroom, and getting fresh air, can be a huge help when studying. By getting out of the zone of studying even for a short time, it refocuses you when you return to the books. Some other things you can do include, going out to eat, going to get ice cream, or just taking a walk.

4.) Binge watch a Netflix series.

When I say this, I don’t mean don’t study. I mean, when you feel you need a break from the books, you can stop to watch one episode from the series. This will get your mind off the books, and will focus you on something that involves a little less brain power. By watching a single episode, it allows you to take around a 30-40 min break. This may seem a little long, but when you take into consideration how long you’re studying it really isn’t that bad.

5.) Make a schedule.

Making a study schedule will help you to keep the stress at a minimum. Without a schedule you are likely to try and study every subject in a single day. By doing this, you are so scatter brained that you aren’t retaining anything you’ve study. Make a schedule that prioritizes the finals that you have first, but that doesn’t disregard your last final. By making  schedule it will ensure that you study what you need to, but it will also make sure that you aren’t leaving your last final until the very end.

Good luck and happy studying!
