If you’re anything like me, the semester is well underway and you’re still caught day-dreaming about your amazing summer. Free time, sunshine, and all the naps a girl could want, abruptly interrupted by the start of a new school year. Yes, its time to buckle down and stay on top of all homework, studying, and responsibilities, but its also SO important to have some fun. Getting out of your room and letting loose is what keeps all of us sane as the semester hits hard and we’re slammed with exams, papers, and lack of sleep.
My go-to stress reliever is an adventure. Adventures can be anything you want them to be – from walking a new way around campus to finding a lookout spot with an incredible view. Doing something new helps refresh your mind and spirit and gives you new energy and motivation.
Lots of students at Cal Lu will admit that Thousand Oaks lacks a little bit in “fun things to do” category. I’ll admit, sometimes it can be slow-paced and short of exciting, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get out there and find out all that this area really has to offer. As your Cal Lu / TO local, I’m here to let you in on the best adventures in the area!
First on the list: Rindge Dam

Category: Hike
Where: Malibu Creek State Park
Length: 3+ hours (you’ll want to hang out for a while, bring food + water)
Special features: Cliff jumping
Best time to go: A sunny weekend
Difficulty: Starts out on a paved road, but takes some skill / climbing to get across the dam
Warning: Rumors say that the city shut down this hike, so be aware of any trespassing fees
Rindge Dam is an amazing destination for anyone looking for an exciting and thrilling adventure. The 100-ft dam built in 1924 is no longer in use but definitely a fun area to explore.
Start out on Malibu Canyon Rd, and drive until you see Mesa Peak Tractor Way. Park at the parking lot just after this road, which sometimes requires a parking fee, depending on the day/time you go. Walk along Malibu Canyon Rd towards the ocean, through the tunnel, and around the bend until you see the small red and white sign for the 1.86 mile marker (the sign literally just says 1.86 on it). Right near this sign there is a narrow path leading down the side of the mountain – down you go!
The hike from here is a little difficult but so different and so fun. Use caution while walking across the top of the dam, remember it’s 100ft tall! Continue on the path and when you get to the bottom you’ll probably see some groups of people hanging out and cliff jumping from the rocks around the sides of the pools. Feel free to take a dip or even a plunge from one of the rocks if you’re feeling daring! My only advice is to BE CAREFUL! The water is clear so avoid the few rocks at the bottom.
This hike is so fun and challenging, perfect if you have a free day. Definitely go with a nice big group of friends!
Check back for the latest adventure, and let me know how you liked this one!
