Simply Regal: How to Be a Ballerina

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cal Lutheran chapter.

Hello readers! I wanted to show off one of my favorite pieces of clothing today: the ballerina skirt. I love the hyper-feminine quality of a skirt like this, as well as the slightly longer length and the vintage look of it. It makes me feel like a ballerina–if only I had the grace of one! I picked mine up at Windsor last year. I went with the red because it’s my favorite color and out of all of the tulle skirts at Windsor, this one had the highest quality tulle that laid the best. I had a lavender skirt like this and I never wore it because the tulle was so stiff and looked awful. So, without further ado, here are three outfits!

OUTFIT #1

This is a bit more of a casual look but it’s just the tulle skirt with a soft crop top from Brandy Melville. The delicate stripes on the shirt make the look more fun and youthful. I don’t mind wearing a slinky top like this because the skirt is modest in length. I then added some cute flats. I’ve worn this outfit plenty of times and I really love it because it’s quick and cute. I’m not wearing any jewelry in the photo, but I would usually pair this with small studs, two small rings I wear and a watch. I don’t usually wear a lot of jewelry, so if you prefer something bolder, I think a statement choker necklace would look lovely!

OUTFIT #2

This outfit is slightly more dressed up than the previous. Obviously, I used the same skirt. I went for the full 50’s look here and paired it with a top from Pin Up Girl Clothing. The top has an empire waist and some pleating at the bust that really enhances the chest. The sleeves can be worn off the shoulder or up higher. I love this top because it has a zipper in the back and it’s a little tight so it really sucks me in—kind of like a corset. The back is cut slightly lower and shows off the back very well (or in my case, my tattoos). I finished the look with black, t-strap flats. If you wanted to dress up the look, heels would look beautiful. Also, this would look great with a black snood or some dramatic matching flowers. And naturally, the best place to take photos in an outfit like this is on your bathroom counter. It keeps things classy. As do the creepy faces.

OUTFIT #3

Last, I have a formal way to wear the skirt. Again, I went super 50’s. I wore the skirt with a black sweater that has a small cherry embroidered on the chest, as well as some red detailing on the shoulder. I wore this to my niece’s baptism, so I added my favorite sparkly red heels and big earrings, which is rare for me. Unfortunately, I did wear a coat over this at the baptism. Still, the outfit was fun, but still formal, which is a great way to wear 1950s style clothing; this type of clothing tends to be aging, so adding color keeps things youthful. A cute baby really adds to the outfit.

Thanks for reading! Enjoy being a ballerina for the day!
