Valedictorian of the prestigious Chilton Prep, Yale alumni, and aspiring journalist, Rory Gilmore knows some secrets of the study game.Â
- Always bring a book. From the high school prom to Friday night dinners, Rory has a book ready to go 24/7. Whether for school or fun, books bring learning and adventure wherever you go.Â
- Study anytime, anywhere. Rory doesn’t just have one study spot; Luke’s diner, the bus to school, and the comfort of home will all do just fine. With busy schedules and lots of work to be done, flexibility means more productivity.
- Believe in yourself. Throughout the sequence of the show, super-student Rory Gilmore experienced some rough patches, but always had faith in achieving her dreams.Â
- Aim big & set challenges. The Gilmores are always #1 in dreaming big. Whether (almost) making the world’s largest pizza or applying for college, they want the best they can get. Even when the workload seems impossible, make big goals and try your hardest, bringing the reassurance that you’ve at least put your best foot forward.Â
- When you get down, take some time, and pick yourself back up again. Although I wouldn’t recommend taking a whole year off during the middle of college (a sixth-season escapade that frustrated many of us), Rory Gimore the academic was still one who needed a break. When it comes to studies, it’s okay to fall apart, as long as the pieces can be put back together.Â
- TV and movies can’t hurt. Rory Gilmore is a master of studying, and a bigger master of the study break. The Gilmores know pop culture like no other, and use it as a form of intellect in and of itself. Don’t be afraid to treat yourself, and maybe on occasion binge yourself.Â
- Make lists. While people love their planners and such, making a run-of-the-mill list can be quite rewarding. When you’re feeling overwhelmed, put it all on one page and check it off as you go. If you’re feeling unsure about it, make a pro-con list.Â
- Use friendly competition. Someone of Paris Geller intensity might be a little much for most of us, but you can always find a friend for some healthy rivalry when in need of motivation.
- Get up early. Mornings can be a wonderful time to get stuff done. If you need to look at an essay with fresh perspective or catch some study time at Starbucks while it’s still quiet (weekends at 7AM are perfect), set your alarm a little earlier and open up new horizons.Â
- And don’t forget the coffee.Â
