Katie Dreher is a spunky and vivacious economics major. She started out as a nutrition major, but decided to switch things up about halfway through her first year. Katie is a newly initiated member of the Alpha Omicron Pi sorority. She enjoys playing softball, watching Grey’s Anatomy and as of 2015, Katie is a vegan.
I met Katie in the dorms last year and we’ve been friends ever since. Choosing Katie as this week’s campus celeb gave me the opportunity to get to know her a little bit better.
1. If you could have drinks with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be?
I’d love to sit and talk with Tim Burton. I think he’s so amazing and creative. I hope that a few drinks would get him to open up and I could see inside that crazy head of his. All his ideas are so unique and there’s really nobody else like him.
2. Which movie character would you switch lives with and why?
I want to be in Avatar. I think they’re making another one so now’s my chance. I guess I would be Zoe Saldana’s character. She’s a badass and their whole world is incredible. Nitri? Natori? I can’t remember her name. (It’s Neytiri)
3. What class would you love to take at Cal Poly?
I wish I could take a cooking class here. Well, not just any cooking class. Is gourmet dessert baking a thing? Either way, that’s what I want. I want to know how to make fancy desserts, but they have to be good. They have to look good and taste even better.
4. What’s your favorite thing about living in San Luis Obispo?
My favorite thing is that there’s always something to do. There are thousands of other students around and we’re all looking to have a good time. I like to get a group together and go hiking or drive out to the beach.
5. If you could spend your summer vacation anywhere in the world, where would you go?
I actually wouldn’t go that far. My favorite place in the world is Lake Tahoe. I’ll definitely spend some time there this summer but I would be there every single day if I could. I’m always happiest when I’m there. I’ve been going since I was a kid. It really is the best.
6. NorCal or SoCal?
Is that even a question? Hella NorCal.
7. What quality do you value most in a friendship?
The most important thing for me is trust. If I can trust you, then it’s all good. Everything else goes back to trust. I can only be myself when I’m around people I trust. That’s what I look for in my friends and in any relationship.
8. Have you ever thought about getting a tattoo?
Oh yeah. I went skydiving a few weeks ago and as I was flying through the air, a tattoo idea kind of came to me. I want a tiny tattoo of a paper airplane with the words “up, up and away” written below it. Skydiving made me realize that the sky is the limit. I felt like I could do anything.
9. What’s your dream job?
I want to be lawyer. It’s my dream job, but that’s really what I’m going to end up doing. I’d look good with a briefcase. Also, I like to argue with people and I’m good at it. It’s a gift.
10. As your second year here comes to an end, is there something you wish you had known as a freshman?
I would tell myself to calm the hell down. I was so nervous and I thought I wouldn’t make any friends. I wish I had joined more clubs and stuff when I was a freshman. I guess I still could. Most of my friends joined sororities during their first year but I waited until this year, but it all worked out in the end.
