5 Reasons Why Kale Is Actually the Best

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cal Poly chapter.

It’s no secret that the leafy green, kale, is quickly taking over the health world. Most restaurants and food chains have some sort of option with kale in it—even McDonald’s has a kale salad now!  Like many health-fanatics in the United States, I too consider myself a bit of a kale enthusiast. I eat kale everyday—usually twice a day—in fact, I’m currently writing this article in my beloved kale sweatshirt.

The important thing is this… the kale phenomenon is no joke. The benefits of eating kale are undeniable. Mainly, there are five benefits.

1. Kale has great caloric value

Kale has merely 30 calories per cup and is loaded with fiber. It also has no fat—it is a great food that will help to fill you up but won’t break the scale.

2. Kale is a wonderful detox

Since kale is filled with sulfur and fiber, eating it will give your body a nice detox.

3. Kale is high in vitamins

It is packed with Vitamin K, Vitamin C and Vitamin A. Also, kale is full of antioxidants and extremely high in calcium…what’s the downside to that?!

4. Kale can help to lower cholesterol

By lowering cholesterol, you are preventing the chance of heart disease. This on its own is reason enough to eat lots and lots of kale.

5. There are cancer-fighting substances in kale

It is proven that substances such as Sulforaphane and indole-3-carbinole help to fight cancer, and both are found in kale.

Kale is more than just a green leaf that America is obsessed with; the benefits that come with consuming kale are unparalleled and if you haven’t tried it yet, it’s never too late to do so!
