As of the beginning of this week, Cal Poly’s mini-chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness has officially been approved! Now, students passionate about positive mental health have the opportunity to lend a hand in building a supportive, educating, and compassionate community for the voices of mental illness that far too often go unheard.
But this club isn’t just for those personally struggling with mental illness. Its doors are open for those who have even the slightest interest in stomping out the stigma of mental illness and replacing it with a collective understanding; it’s for students who are passionate about spreading awareness and education across campus, SLO, and the rest of the world; it’s even a place for people who simply want to learn more about what mental illness really is. Ultimately, NAMI is a club for people who believe love, empathy, and understanding go far much further than hate, judgement, and a closed mind. NAMI provides a place for like-minded people to start a movement, have a much-needed discussion, and provide a bright light for those in the dark.
Currently, the club is working on establishing a location for weekly meetings (Mondays at 3PM in UU218), a UU showcase that emphasizing he reality of Cal Poly’s mental illness statistic, and a number of upcoming and exciting events!
