Walking into a room of 50+ strangers is one of the most intimidating things you could ever do. But if those strangers are members of the Society of Women Engineers, then intimidating is the furthest word that should be used. These Cal Poly women foster a welcoming and friendly atmosphere in their weekly meetings, which always fill up a large lecture room!
The Society of Women Engineers is actually a national educational organization that encourages women to achieve their full potential in the fields of engineering. With one of the most established engineering programs in the nation, Cal Poly’s chapter of SWE achieves as much outside the classroom as they do in. From going through hours of Outreach training to volunteering in 4th grade classrooms to mentoring and judging the high school VEX Robotics competition, no wonder our campus’s chapter continues to win the “Outstanding Collegiate Section” from SWE Nationals.
Even their general meetings are impressive. When they’re not planning their many events or socializing, the SWE often brings in guest speakers from different companies and firms to talk about various topics in engineering fields. This year, they’ve had representatives from Northrop Grumman, Kaiser, Apple, and Varian Medical come in and give insight as to what it’s like to be in the workforce. These 50+ SWE members dedicate themselves to these career lectures even after a full day of classes, proving their willingness to achieve great things.
Cal Poly’s Society of Women Engineers meets Wednesdays from 6-7pm in Building 197, Room 104. You can sign up to receive weekly emails to stay informed on their upcoming events, and even join the Society of Women Engineers as a member and receive benefits. If you’re someone who celebrates women in engineering, then the Society of Women Engineers welcomes you with open arms!
