Clubs of Cal Poly: Yo Tango

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cal Poly chapter.

If you’ve ever seen the movie “Take The Lead” (especially the smokin’ hot scene between Pierre Dulaine and Morgan), then you know that tango can be an intense and passionate dance. While you may not be able to smolder exactly like Antonio Banderas ā€“ and let’s be real, no one can ever achieve that ā€“ you can still learn those smooth tango moves themselves. Cal Poly’s own Argentine tango club, Yo Tango, will help you learn how to get those “oohs” and “ahhs” on the dance floor!

Yo Tango meets at 3pm on Saturdays, in Building 5, Room 225. They offer all-level lessons at this time! For those who feel like more of a challenge, they also host a technique-focused practica (a fancy dance word for practice whatever you want) at 2pm on Saturdays before the lesson. The best part? Theyā€™re all free of charge!

They are one of the clubs that participates in the Masquerade Ball every year, an event where the dance clubs join forces and host a fun night of lessons and dancing of all styles during spring quarter. They also encourage our members to compete in Mustang Ball, a competitions and performance event hosted by the Cal Poly DanceSport Team in the winter. But if you’re a more casual dancer, you can support Yo Tango while they perform at the Open House showcase.

What really sets Yo Tango apart is their enthusiasm for making Tango approachable to everyone and anyone. They’re working to emphasize the social aspect by hosting more dances and events, including reaching out to the outer Tango community in SLO for milongas and other dances. Not only will Yo Tango provide you with the knowledge of an amazing dance and its culture, they’ll make sure you experience as much fun doing it as possible. And if you needed any more reason to join them on a Saturday afternoon, this short demo is actual #goals.
