It’s that time of year again: the Academy Awards! Not only is it Hollywood’s biggest night, but it’s one of the greatest fashion spectacles of the year by far. And let’s be honest, looking at all the dresses is usually more fun than the ceremony itself! So, who will rule the Oscars red carpet this year? Jennifer Lawrence? Sandra Bullock? Newcomer Lupita Nyong’o? While we wait to find out, let’s take a look back at some of the best gowns in recent Oscars history to get excited for this Sunday!
Jennifer Lawrence is sure to make a statement on the Academy Awards red carpet this weekend, as she has done twice before! In 2011 at her first Oscars, she attracted a lot of attention in this red Calvin Klein dress that fit her like a glove . Last year, her Dior gown became infamous not only for the tumble that she took in it while walking up to accept her Oscar, but also for its timeless elegance. The simple yet gorgeous necklace falling down her back and sophisticated hair completed the look. The nominee’s arrival Sunday will definitely be one of the most exciting, especially with her new short haircut!
Amy Adams, a Best Actress nominee for American Hustle this year, is another actress that will definitely stand out. Last year, Adams had a full out Cinderella moment on the red carpet, looking stunning in an Oscar De La Renta ball gown, classic up-do and drop diamond earrings.
Sandra Bullock is also hoping for the Best Actress Oscar this year for her performance in Gravity. In 2010, her gorgeous metallic Marchesa number was the perfect complement to her equally shiny award for her work in The Blind Side. In 2011, Sandra went with a more reserved look but still impressed in a simply beautiful red gown by Vera Wang. Can’t wait to see what she’ll be wearing Sunday!
In 2011, supporting her film Black Swan, Mila Kunis wowed in a lavender creation by Elie Saab—truly one of the most stunning Oscar gowns of the past few years!
Anne Hathaway took home an Oscar last year, but the statuesque brunette’s exquisite Armani gown from 2009 is more flattering and memorable, a definite win over 2013’s look (right).
Accompanied by her handsome date, the late Heath Ledger, Michelle Williams looked absolutely gorgeous in this yellow Vera Wang gown at the 2006 ceremony. Complete with a red lip and soft hairstyle, it was an unforgettable red carpet appearance.
One to watch: Kenyan beauty Lupita Nyong’o has been dominating the red carpet this awards season, and her Oscar red carpet debut is highly anticipated. Nominated for 12 Years A Slave, the newcomer was easily one of the best dressed at the Golden Globes in her red Ralph Lauren gown, (with a cape!), and continues to impress the fashion world. Keep an eye out for her on Sunday.
Make sure to take a study break and watch the red carpet arrivals on E! with coverage beginning Sunday at 1:30pm, followed by the live show airing at 5:30pm on ABC.
