Whether you’re an incoming freshman or a long time SLO resident, there’s always fun to be had and new things to try at the Farmers’ Market every Thursday at 6 p.m. This week, take a break from your dorm food or just tickle your taste buds with some of the most delicious booths our Farmers’ Market has to offer.
1. Mama’s Meatballs
Sick of VG’s spaghetti and (one giant) meatball? Or are those Subway meatball subs just not cutting it? If you answered ‘yes’ to either of those questions, look no further than Mama’s Meatballs’ stand at Farmers’! The delicious meatball sandwiches are on a whole different level than anything you’ve ever tried before. If the sample at Farmers’ entices you, try out the famous Italian restaurant by the same name on Higuera Street.
2. Marcie’s Pies & Goods
If you still have room for dessert, stop by Marcie’s Pies and Goods for a delicious fruit pie. They have a huge variety of flavors ranging from classic apple, to apricot, rhubarb, and peach. If you want leftovers, you can buy a whole pie or just stick to one slice to finish off your delicious meal at Farmers’. If you’re having trouble deciding on a flavor, they’ll always let you try a sample!
3. Shins
Look out for the barbeque grill with a wrought iron “Shins” sign on top if you’re craving some mouthwatering chicken teriyaki. They’ll pile delicious strips of chicken straight from the barbeque onto your plate of rice, which you can drench in sweet teriyaki sauce and spicy mayonnaise. It’s heavenly!
4. F. McLintock’s Saloon & Dining
Just look for the longest line at the entire market and you’ll know you’ve found F. McLintock’s. But, ask anyone and they’ll assure you the meal is definitely worth the wait. I’d personally suggest going for the ribs (the juiciest ones at Farmers’), but the barbeque chicken and tri tip are also popular choices. If you’re not up for the long wait, you can always hop in the express line for a glass of their fresh lemonade.
5. The Rib Line
Walk all the way to the very last booth at the market and you’ll find the legendary tri-tip of The Rib Line. You’ll know you’re there when someone is yelling for you to come try their tri-tip sandwiches and handing you a free sample. That should be enough to convince you, but if not, you should know their Famous Tri-Tip Sando was featured in a 2011 episode of “Man v. Food.” You have to try it. Not only is it perfectly tender and the bread toasted to golden perfection, but it’s really the homemade BBQ sauce that makes it the best tri-tip sandwich you’ll have in your life.
If your mouth isn’t watering at the sound of this delicious food to try downtown, I don’t know what will. Find a meter, take a walk or catch the bus down to Farmers’ later this week for some of these amazing Thursday Night Bites!
