3 Online Shopping Hacks You Need to Know

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cal State LA chapter.

One of the greatest achievements in technology is not the self-driving car nor is it the Fitbit or one of those fancy wearable smart devices that track your health everyday. The great technological achievement dear reader is the one and only: online shopping. Invented in 1979 by English entrepreneur, Michael Aldrich, online shopping has saved us all at one point or another from having to put in effort to look marginally decent for society. Here are three discount hacks for your online shopping trips so you don’t have to wait until Cyber Monday to go extra hard.

1.     Honey

Honey is an extension app found on Google Chrome (Safari users, you’d have to check for this one yourself) that can automatically find and apply coupon codes when you shop online. Once on a particular store, if the little Honey icon on your extension bar turns orange, that means that the store you are on has possible discounts for you to use. This makes finding promo codes a lot easier and faster.

2.     UNIdays

Thanks to the Brits, bank accounts of students around the world can cry a little less with UNIdays. By signing up with your school email, UNIdays gives each user an individual promo code that will give 10%-20% discounts for particular stores.

3.     Ebates

Last but not least, Ebates is a LIFESAVER. In a short summary, Ebates gives you free money to shop through their store. This site carries hundreds of online stores from Target to Groupon to Nastygal. Each store has a certain percentage of cash back that you get from your purchase. By downloading the Ebates extension, the icon will light up whenever an online store you are on has cash back. All you need to do is click the icon to activate cash back. A bonus that occurs from time to time is double-cash back. For example, Sephora usually has 4% cash back but with double-cash back, it would increase to 8%. After a certain period, you can have Ebates send you the money you made by check or PayPal to continue the vicious cycle of online shopping.

Christine Tran

Cal State LA

After taking four different MBTI tests, Christine is the definition of someone who is half ENFJ and ESFP (she got two for each type). With that being said, this clearly explains her major in Communications at Cal State LA. With a love for fashion and music, she's the type of person who will post #ootds and pictures of every concert she's at on her Instagram. Along with that, Christine has a horrible addiction with cupcakes and tattoos which will eventually be the death of her unless her parents figure out she already has more than one tattoo first.... Find out what she's up to by following her Instagram @christineetran
