Hair Fare: 5 ways to upgrade your locks!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Carleton chapter.

We all have our fair share of hair-horror stories (I may or may not have permed my hair in high school and it may or may not have been a complete disaster). But when you’re in a hair funk or you’ve been rocking that ponytail for way too long (and you’re owning it, don’t get me wrong!), a change in your ‘do might be the solution for you! Here are some of my favourite suggestions for your locks, complete with a rating of how daring they are. Make it work!

  1. Get a trim!

While it’s the least dramatic suggestion on my list, you would be surprised how incredibly awesome a simple trim is for your hair! Snipping off a couple of inches allows your hair to grow, and makes it look incredibly healthy. Who really wants split ends, anyway?

How daring? Not super daring. Trims are generally cheap(!) and makes your hair look healthy. What more could you want?

  1. Undercut It
Undercuts are pretty rad and add some boldness to your look! Everybody from Miley Cyrus to Cher Lloyd (pictured) has been rocking it this season. The only downside is that it may look a little awkward if you want to grow it out, and I hear that the upkeep is a little bothersome. However, if you want to try something new, go for it!
How daring? Fairly daring. Either you’ll hate it and be stuck with it for a bit or you’ll love it.

  1. Bangin’
Bangs are pretty awesome, straight up. Almost anybody can rock them and they can instantly change your entire look. For those who fear hair commitment: try a long swept side bang. If you hate it, you can easily tuck them behind your ear or, worse case scenario, they will grow out super quickly and you will never have to deal with them again. For the brave, I think blunt bangs are the cutest.
How daring? While it depends on the style of bang you get, bangs are awesome but not crazy daring. If you hate them, they will eventually grow out.
  1. Dip Dye Dynamite
I am a huge fan of dip dyeing. I personally like unconventional colours used as the dip dye as it adds an incredible pop to a dull all-over colour. It is a bit less committal than ombre and it looks way funkier, too.
How daring? Super daring. You may have to bleach your hair first (yikes) in order for the colour to keep to your hair. However, if you are starting with a light colour, you may be able to get away with avoiding bleaching (bleaching dries out your hair and might cause it to fall out or be discoloured if not done right, so be super careful!).

  1. Pixie Dreamgirl
Pixie cuts are so incredibly popular because they are just so cute! Pixie cuts are great for those who do not want to deal with hour long styling sessions in the morning as they are easy to maintain. Plus, think of how long a single bottle of shampoo will last!
How daring? Super daring. You’re committing to a seriously short cut, after all!

After I dyed my hair red this summer, I am STILL getting compliments on it to this day. A good haircut or hairstyle can add a huge boost of confidence and can instantly refresh your entire look. Whatever you choose, rock it, own it and make it yours. You may inspire others to do the same.
