Hot Take: Loeb is the Best Building on Campus

With everyone back and bustling around campus, it’s definitely made me retreat to my favourite and (usually) quiet buildings. Warning: I’m about to spill some serious unpopular opinions, but please know: I regret nothing. In my opinion, this is indisputably the best spot on campus, and I will always and forever try to tell anyone who listens why this building is the best. Even if you don’t agree, this should at least offer you the chance to be adventurous and find some new study spaces in Loeb.

It’s Quiet

Is it ever! As a fourth-year student, I’ve seen campus from pre to post-COVID-19 and now that most of the restrictions are gone, it seems like the campus is busier than ever. So I will do anything to find a quiet space to study. What better place than the most unpopular? Loeb is known to be run-down, scary, and confusing for its open staircases and tower system. However, what comes with that is so much seating – new and old. Because everyone hates it, there’s always somewhere to sit and study. The basement tends to be quieter, with single and quadruple seating. Plus, there’s even a quiet study area classroom on the second floor, meant just for people to work quietly amongst each other. It’s been amazing, especially with the construction at the library.

Lots of Group Studying

Though the first floor is usually quiet, there is also group seating, as well as the small cafe available (but more on that later). The second floor also has new group seating with beautiful windows and whiteboards to use to get your juices flowing! If the new part is all full, there’s still a lot of group seating down the hall that tends to be quieter than the new space. So if you’re looking to sit with friends but actually get work done – this is the spot for you. In the warmer months, there’s also an extension of Loeb Cafe outside that gets hit in the sun and shade – making it the perfect outdoor study space.

Snacks, Snacks, and More Snacks

If you live off-campus like me, then Loeb is also the best place to eat — both to buy and bring packed food. Loeb Cafe, which recently just re-opened and it includes a Pizza Pizza and a Bento sushi! It’s so convenient to have more food close by, especially when you have classes on that side of campus. It also has some of the best vending machines on campus, like five of them in a row! There’s one with fresh sandwiches, one with pop, one with cookies and chips, you name it. But if you’re trying to save money or just prefer a packed lunch, Loeb is still the best place to go. There are three microwaves between the first and second floors, as well as a water bottle refill station in Loeb Cafe, making it the ultimate off-campus student hub.

Well, there you have it, three reasons why you should reconsider your opinions on this building. I love Loeb and I don’t care who knows it!!! This would be my overall first draft pick any day. I will admit it is a bit drab, boring, and literally the furthest building possible on campus. But I absolutely adore this building and always will. From first-year study grinds to fourth-year seminar classes, this building has been a small academic home for me, and I will always adore it.
