Staying Connected with Nature as the Weather Gets Colder

It’s that time of year again when going outside can feel like a chore, and it’s no secret that this can affect how we may feel on a day-to-day basis. Whether you prefer staying inside, miss the outdoors when it’s cold (like me!), or are somewhere in between, we should all aim to stay connected to nature this winter season.

Staying connected to nature as the temperature continues to drop is one of the best ways we can combat that ‘stuck-inside-and-stuffy’ feeling that I know myself and many others start to feel in November. It may feel like all of the outdoor possibilities that came with summer have disappeared, but there is still plenty we can do to get some outdoor time.

Skating!

My favourite winter activity is skating, like many others. You definitely can’t do this in the summer! Rent or buy a pair of skates and head towards one of Ottawa’s many skating rinks, including The Rink of Dreams and Lansdowne Skating Court (maybe the canal will even freeze over for longer this year!).

There are also lots of rinks surrounding Ottawa that loop through forests, putting you front and center with the wonders of the outdoor world.

BUILD A SNOWMAN

If you’re feeling a little more fun, invite some friends or family outside to build a snowman, or better yet, go sledding (preferably on a hill with no trees!). There is no better way to get some exercise and get some time outside.

MEDITATION

On days where you don’t feel like going anywhere, or it’s been a long day, consider doing some guided meditation somewhere safe outside. I find that this is a great way to connect with nature on days I feel lazy or unmotivated (which is a lot this time of year…).

THE MAGIC OF LAYERS

The greatest challenge that faces us this time of year in all the activities listed is, obviously, the cold. But how can we combat this? LAYERS. Lots, and lots, of clothing layers, including a warm jacket, hats, mitts, and of course, fluffy socks tucked into boots.

Once you’ve suited up into a warm, comfortable fit appropriate for outside, your opportunities are endless. The cold is no longer stopping you from taking a brisk walk around the block, or simply sitting outside on a front porch or balcony.

Remember- its okay to want to stay inside, but don’t forget about the world that is outside of your home. It is important for keeping us happy and healthy.

Natalie is one of the current Event Team Members operating at Carleton University's Her Campus! She helps organize, and run events on and off campus. Outside of Natalie's Her Campus duties, she is a second-year student in the Psychology program, with a specialization in Cognitive Psychology. Natalie is passionate about the inner workings of the human brain, and is excited to delve deeper into the cognitive and neurological side of mental health and wellness this year. She has experience designing and running wellness campaigns for her student council in all four years of high school, and can't wait to finally bring her skills to the Carleton campus. Apart from school duties, Natalie is passionate about her indoor garden of houseplants that she tends to daily. She also is a regular gym goer, and participates in many Girl Gain's club activities. Natalie is a strong advocate for using nature and the gym as an outlet to relieve stress and feel good. In spare time, she writes short stories and poetry. Natalie is exciting to be writing for HCC this year!
