Ah, February. It’s a time to huddle under a mountain of blankets in order to escape the ridiculously cold weather and perhaps spend some time with that special someone in your life. But here’s a reality check: this romantic month is not immune to break-ups, heartaches or wallow sessions with two of my good friends: a tub of sorbet and an extra large pizza.
I’ve composed a list of my top 10 favourite songs that will help you get over that broken heart – from the Rolling Stones to Taylor Swift to Bob Dylan, there’s something on my play list for everyone. Cry, dance, scream and sing that heartache out.
1. Cry Me a River – Justin Timberlake
It’s no secret that JT wrote this about Britney and it kind of makes you feel a little sorry for Justin. The video itself is fairly scandalous (for its time, really), but the lyrics are heartbreaking: great for helping you get over that pop star who sold you out to Barbara Walters (or, you know, somebody who wronged you).
2. You Oughta Know – Alanis Morissette
Weird fact: this song was written about Morissette’s relationship with Uncle Joey from Full House. From her amazing and beautiful album Jagged Little Pill, You Oughta Know is probably the quintessential, greatest and angriest 90s break-up anthem of all time.
3. Shake It Out – Florence + the Machine
Okay so first off, could I be Florence Welch? Secondly, could we all just be Florence Welch? Honestly, this song is so beautiful and the best kind to cry to. Shake that heartbreak, girl.
4. She’s So Cold – The Rolling Stones
The Rolling Stones have been my favourite band since I can remember, and this song especially takes the cake. I’m so hot for you / and you’re so cold, complains Mick. We have all been there, let’s be real.
5. I Knew You Were Trouble – Taylor Swift
Pursuing somebody even though you know the end result probably won’t be in your favour? We’ve all been there, too. Sing along dramatically with Taylor – it helps.

6. Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right – Bob Dylan
I ain’t sayin’ you treated me unkind / You could have done better but I don’t mind / You just kinda wasted my precious time. Oh Bobby. Maybe one of the best break-up songs to cry along to; just know that Bob Dylan sympathizes with your heartbreak.
7. No Scrubs – TLC
Never settle, ladies. Especially not for a scrub or a buster. This is the ultimate jam-out and automatic feel-better song. Invite your girls over and breakout the TLC, it helps, trust me!
8. Somebody Like You – Adele
Okay it’s kind of obvious that Adele had to be on this list. Who hasn’t “ugly cried” along to this song? You’ll find somebody even better in due time, don’t worry.
9. Haven’t Met You Yet – Michael Buble
I’m pretty sure I’m destined to be Buble’s next wife and I’m fairly certain he wrote this song about me (not his current hot supermodel wife). This song is cute, upbeat and super inspiring. You never know when love will be waiting around the corner – perhaps even in the supermarket!
10. I Will Survive – Gloria Gaynor
I am ending this list on a total high note. Hold your head up high, save your loving for somebody worthy, strap on a pair of roller skates and dance it out. You will, in fact, survive – Gloria and I will bet on it.
